Plenty more to still unpack, but as always, an unvaluable experience being out in the field once again and a big thank you to everyone who took the time to meet and to chat.

Then there is Nacala Port. I knew the figures, which describe its enormous size and significance to the region (a natural deepwater harbour positioned to serve Malawi and Zambia), but its underutilisation had diminished its physical scale in my mind. Its potential is mindblowing.

But the enthusiasm for Mondlane was unmistakable, and in a predominantly Makua area marked by longstanding neglect, it is easy to understand the appeal of someone challenging the status quo so directly.

—and those on the fringes are more supportive. Probably some people do not want their businesses disturbed, but it is also true that Mondlane’s methods and political style do not appeal to everyone, and that Frelimo has successfully persuaded some that Chapo represents renewal.

Outside of CAVAME-d, I noticed a clear divide between those who support opposition politician Venâncio Mondlane and those who do not. I've noticed it in Maputo, too. The middle class is generally strongly critical of him and the disruption associated with his mobilisation—

Besides Frelimo’s poor track record in the north, the claim sat awkwardly beside the city’s terrible roads (only two upgraded since independence), deteriorating buildings, frequent power failures. The conference was held in a marquee by the airport, showing what the city lacks.

Chapo also spoke, on the second day. His speech was repetitive, though did become much more engaging towards the end, especially when he went off script. But there was a lot that was uncomfortable to hear. For instance, that Nacala was where he first learned to serve the people..

This centralisation is really taking shape. AREMI, a new superagency, will supersede INAMI and the ministry, taking on licensing and other functions. The new mining law regulations make that very clear. There is a lot to be concerned about how the limited oversight this brings.

I attended CAVAME-d, an annual conference which combines three events covering mining and logistics. Mines and energy minister Estêvão Pale was very subdued, not really surprising considering his limited influence as President Daniel Chapo steadily centralises power...

I recently spent a week in the port city of Nacala, northern #Mozambique. Here are a few of my observations 🧵🇲🇿
