Stats is broken. Causal inference is broken. Together they are less broken. I will teach a 3h online course in September, aimed at ppl who have tried to understand connections btw causal inference & statistical inference but were discouraged by notation & puffery. @StatHorizons

Excited to announce that the AI Snake Oil book is now available to preorder in many different formats. Thank you to everyone who has already preordered! Ebook: press.princeton.edu/books/eb… amazon.com/Snake-Oil-Artific… Audiobook (with a bonus track featuring commentary by @sayashk and me): press.princeton.edu/books/au… amazon.com/Snake-Oil-Artific… Reduced price Indian edition: amazon.in/Snake-Oil-Artifici… And of course the hardcover print book: press.princeton.edu/books/ha… amazon.com/Snake-Oil-Artific… bookshop.org/p/books/ai-snak… This is the first time we’ve written a mass-market book. We learned that preordering a book, as opposed to ordering after release, can make a big difference to its success. Preorder sales are used by retailers to decide which books to stock and promote after release. They help books get recognized on best-seller lists. They allow our publishers to anticipate how many copies need to be printed and how the book should be distributed. They are also used by online booksellers to make algorithmic recommendations. In short, preordering early is the best way to support our work. 🙏

Making the UK a science 'super-power' calls for streamlining the research system, not just £££s. Three recent reports set out how, but full implementation is vital: tinyurl.com/ka5x3yp4 @ukrepro @CebmOxford @JessButler284 @chrisdc77 @bengoldacre @senseaboutsci @consiliumsci

It's Saturday night, and I'll probably post about this again, but I just wrote up well over 20k words on my personal history as a metascience venture capitalist (so to speak).

How are we supposed to use data to inform clinical practice? Nice paper pointing out that even randomized experiments require careful thinking about what we want to know. bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.co… I think too about public policy, where experiments are harder and estimands vaguer.

I finally finished reading this draft. This is not another statistics book. It is much better than that. It is about doing quantitative research, scientific justification, quality control, communication and epistemic humility. Very useful.
Re-drafting Telling Stories with Data: tellingstorieswithdata.com Feedback/typos/opinions/etc greatly appreciated.

💯 This thread v much encapsulates the rationale for @PCI_RegReports & the broader @PeerCommunityIn family. Journals, publishers, APCs & other fees, prestige and profit-making in general are all disposable in the reporting of academic research. And in time we will dispose of them
if "open science" includes acquiescence to a profit extraction model built on prestige hoarding and faith that the market solves for its harms, it is meaningless as a goal and worthless as a movement. we need information liberation now.
