This is important. Liberals have to take this seriously. Nothing you say about any other issue will matter if your belief in democracy and human rights ends up creating societies like pre-Bukele El Salvador.
El Salvador is rightly famed for its strides on public order, but most people don’t grasp the brutal extent of previous gang rule or the complex dividends peace affords. All kinds of mundane and essential public goods re-materialize now that people can walk around, ride transit, and go about their lives without being terrorized. This historic square used to be patrolled by warring gangs, and housed an informal economy of corrugated-tin shanties where subsistence street vendors forfeited much of their meager income to “protection” rackets. No formal economy is possible if thugs might burn or smash or sabotage any capital improvement you make. Now, there are ordinary shops lining this downtown area — and even early Christmas decorations.

I am disappointed he was not re-elected. He is one of the nicest guys in politics.
Niagara Falls, I’m so grateful for the last 16 years. Being your mayor has been the honour of my life. From my family to yours, thank you for your support, friendship & kindness. It means more than words can say. We’ve taken a couple of days to give our new mayor her moment in the spotlight, and for us, to enjoy some time together as a family. Best wishes to Mayor-Elect Lococo. @NiagaraFalls will always have my heart. ♥️

Because the self-determination of a settler population, even after nearly 200 years, counts for nothing? Is this really where Israel wants to go?
Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered Israel to support Argentina over the Falklands, The Telegraph can reveal. The Israeli prime minister told diplomats to change his country’s official position and join Buenos Aires in calling for direct talks over the future of the islands. 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2…

Two profs looked at Bradford's campaign, found complaints about filthy subways and unsafe parks, and bravely concluded: Trump. No rebuttals. No facts. Footnotes, presumably, pending. Noticing the subway is disgusting is now a symptom of populism. Disagree? You're Trump. If this is the rigour our universities celebrate, we have bigger problems than the subway. And if this is Chow's surrogate A-team, she's in trouble. Go vote, Toronto.

The poll of 3,100 Toronto residents was conducted on the evening of October 6, and shows that Chow has 44% support among voters, while Bradford follows closely with 41% support. Meanwhile 11% are still undecided, 3% are supporting a different candidate, and 2% reported that they would not be voting.  scoperesearch.ca/scope-resea…

The Army has halted all collective training to save a third of the money we’re giving to Gaza so that Andy Burnham can stop Zack Polanski from winning the Holborn and St Pancras by-election.

I'm sure he thinks he is cleverly trolling the Labour government. But what he is actually doing is making moderate and conservative Brits, who have hitherto been strong supporters of the US and of Israel, reconsider their positions.
I support a four state solution! From the river to the sea, Scotland,Wales, and Ireland will be free!

He stabbed the clerics immediately upon release from a brief sentence for smashing a woman's face and then a prison guard's head, which is unrelated to the time he shot somebody in a school parking lot. Regrettably, nothing could be done.
New from me: the man accused of stabbing two men at an Edmonton Sikh temple has a history of random violence linked to substance use and delusions "centred around new world conspiracies and government control," according to parole docs edmontonjournal.com/news/cri…

If you falsely claim US led forces killed 4+ million people after 9/11, by citing an absurd study that blames all the mass murder committed by the Assad regime & Iran during the Arab Spring on the US, you are engaged in atrocity revisionism. Owen Jones is an atrocity revisionist.

There is a special kind of evil in taking time out of your day to go and celebrate the vicious murder of another human being.

Critiques like these can be especially devastating because they puncture the carefully cultivated image of candidates like Claudia Chender, who present themselves as reflections of everyday voters, and expose them as run-of-the-mill politicians at a time when that is deeply out of vogue. Any wonder she got so worked up about it.

Gloves are off in Vancouver’s civic election! From a purely comms perspective, this slaps! Colleen Hardwick and TEAM are going straight after the homeowner base at the heart of Mayor Ken Sim and ABC’s electoral fortress.
Pete Fry and the @VanGreens talk green, but their voting record tells another story. Vancouver deserves parks, trees, livable neighbourhoods, and a real voice for residents.

Tell this to the Social Democrats in Denmark who absolutely NEUTERED the far right by just taking a harder line on immigration.
German Chancellor Merz seems about to make the mistake that other centrist leaders have made to fend off the far right. Preemptively implementing their program does not diminish the need for them but legitimizes and reinforces them. trib.al/ETA8yO2.

I very much appreciate Canada’s decision to remove seafood and fish products from its retaliatory tariff list. These tariffs would have caused tremendous harm to Maine’s lobstermen, disrupting one of their most important markets during the fall fishing season. I urge the U.S. to respond to this show of good faith from our Canadian friends by returning to the negotiating table and working to amicably resolve this trade dispute. Canada is not China. Canada is one of our closest allies and largest trading partners. Our economies are inextricably linked, especially in the border regions. Continuing with these tariffs will harm Maine families, small businesses, municipalities, manufacturers, and farmers. When I spoke with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer this week, I stressed the negative impact U.S. tariffs will have on Maine — especially our forest, food, cement, road salt users and producers. Tariffs will also stress municipal budgets, as small towns in Maine rely on Canadian road salt and cannot afford to incur extra costs to keep their roads safe in the winter.
