Cohort study finds >1/4 emergency department patients ≥65y with #COVID19 have #delirium, and it’s associated with worse outcomes. Emergency providers must look for delirium & include COVID-19 in the differential of delirium. @MauraKennedyMD @sharon_inouye ja.ma/3kKSTc4

There remains scant evidence wearing a mask- especially improperly- provides much benefit to a healthy wearer. However emerging data suggests facial coverings may prevent asymptomatic disease transmission to others. We always follow and react to the data - @CDCgov is studying

I fear our best practices for #delirium and for care of older adults will not happen during #COVID19 use of antipsychotics and sedation will skyrocket. For many reasons. Some justifiable, many not. @jasonkarlawish @ElderLifeProg @NIDUS_Delirium @DrDaleNeedham @icurehab @HomeIcu
Avoid antipsychotics in the prevention & treatment of delirium. Thank you AHRQ & JHU researchers. @ElderLifeProg @NIDUS_Delirium @PSUNursing @ReMindLab

NYT article about COVID-19 and acute brain dysfunction. Delirium may also be the first manifestation of COVID-19 before any symptoms. We need to study this further. nytimes.com/2020/04/01/healt…

Replying to @JinHanMD
We are discussing exemptions for patients with dementia- a group at high risk of delirium. If the hospital setting isn’t deliriogenic enough, imagine all staff members you interact with being in masks and gowns.

A #PPE hack for those not used to wearing them too often. For disposal gowns, to prevent riding up and exposure of wrist, poke a hole with your thumb. Gloves on top. #COVID2019 @THP_hospital
