Can family insurance cover an uninsured or hit-and-run crash? On Behalf of Jody D. Peterman, LLC | Oct 20, 2026 | Car Accidents | The driver who hit you in Valdosta has no insurance or has fled the scene. Now, who pays your medical bills and repair costs? You might have another option, even if you do not have uninsured motorist (UM) coverage of your own. A family member’s car insurance may help cover your losses. Under Georgia law, certain relatives who live in the same household may qualify for this protection. Who can use a family member’s policy? In Georgia, this protection generally extends to the person named on the policy, their spouse and certain relatives who live with them. You may also be covered if you were walking or driving another car when the crash happened. Several factors can affect your eligibility: •Family relationship: You must be the spouse or a relative covered by the policy. •Living together: You generally must share a household. A child away at college may still qualify if they remain part of the family home. •Insurance coverage: The family member’s policy must include UM protection that applies to your crash. These details may determine whether you are covered. When can UM coverage help after a crash? State law allows UM benefits in two types of crashes: •Uninsured driver: The driver who caused the crash has no insurance that covers your losses. •Hit-and-run driver: The driver cannot be found or identified. The state generally requires the other vehicle to hit you or your property. If there was no contact, another witness who saw the crash must support your account of how it happened. Depending on the policy and your losses, UM benefits may help cover medical expenses, lost wages and other damages. However, coverage limits and claim requirements still apply. What if your insurance claim faces complications? Even if you qualify for household UM coverage, the insurer may question your residency, the accident details or whether the policy applies. Delayed reporting may also complicate your claim. Keeping police reports, medical records, witness information and insurance documents organized can help establish what happened and support your claim. If your insurer disputes coverage, understanding your options for a car accident claim can be important. Legal guidance can help clarify applicable policy terms, Georgia’s UM requirements and your options for pursuing compensation.

Toxic exposure risks in nursing homes On Behalf of Jody D. Peterman, LLC | Oct 2, 2026 | Nursing Home Abuse | People often associate serious and fatal harm suffered by those in nursing homes and other care facilities with falls, getting the wrong medication and even infections that can result from neglect. However, another potential danger is exposure to and ingestion of toxic substances. These facilities use large amounts of cleaning products, pesticides and other toxic substances. They should be locked up when not in use and kept out of the reach of residents when they are in use. However, sometimes residents are able to access them and may not realize what they are. Unlabeled containers can cause deadly mistakes This is more likely to happen to a resident with dementia. However, even mild cognitive impairment or confusion can cause a resident to consume a poisonous product – particularly if it’s not in its original container. In one particularly tragic case in a California assisted living facility, three residents were poisoned – one fatally – when dishwashing liquid that had been poured into a pitcher was mistaken by staff for juice and served at a meal. People who choose to harm themselves or take their own lives may consume these products deliberately if they aren’t secured. Unfortunately, loved ones can’t always count on these facilities to thoroughly investigate a serious injury or death or even to tell the truth. Further, it can be difficult to get an autopsy on an elderly person – particularly if they had serious health issues When family members have concerns about the cause of a loved one’s injuries, illness or death in a nursing home and don’t believe they’re getting the full and accurate story or they believe the facility’s management or staff were at fault, it’s wise to get experienced legal guidance to seek justice and compensation.

Weight and height differences make truck accidents riskier On Behalf of Jody D. Peterman, LLC | Sep 14, 2026 | Truck Accidents | Truck accidents are more dangerous than standard car crashes. This is because the chances of catastrophic injuries and fatalities are higher in truck crashes. A significant percentage of fatal crashes reported yearly in Georgia involve a truck. The weight and height differences between a truck and a standard passenger vehicle heavily contribute to the increased risk: Trucks are substantially heavier and higher  A commercial truck often weighs 20 to 30 times more than a standard passenger vehicle. With the latter weighing, on average, around 4,000 pounds, a truck can weigh from 10,000 pounds to 80,000 pounds when loaded.  An 80,000-pound truck is 20 times heavier than a 4,000-pound standard car. When travelling at the same speed, the truck possesses 20 times more kinetic energy. If these two collide, the car will absorb almost all the impact energy.  Since it’s heavy, the truck will barely slow down during the impact. Its velocity (speed in its specific direction) will change slightly – only a fraction. However, because the standard passenger car is lighter, it will experience an instant and large change in velocity. The truck’s massive forward momentum will push right through the car. Such force can completely overwhelm the small vehicle’s safety systems like crumple zones, exposing occupants to a force that can result in severe injuries. When it comes to height, a commercial truck can stand at about 13.5 feet tall compared to a standard passenger car’s 4 to 5 feet. This height difference can make a crash between these two more dangerous, as there is a risk of an underride crash. The standard car can slide underneath the truck, leading to catastrophic injuries. A truck accident can considerably change your life. If you were injured in such an accident, consider legal guidance to receive the compensation you deserve.

Recovering future income when a loved one dies suddenly On Behalf of Jody D. Peterman, LLC | Aug 29, 2026 | Wrongful Death | Successful wrongful death lawsuits can provide grieving families with a degree of closure. People may find it easier to move on after a tragedy when the courts have affirmed that a specific person or business is responsible for their loss. Additionally, wrongful death lawsuits can help diminish the lasting economic impact of a tragedy. Families can recover immediate expenses, including the cost of medical care, and they can also request compensation for the future income and earning potential of the person who has died. Lost future wages can be hard to calculate Determining what someone might have earned if they survived is not always a straightforward process. Wages usually do not remain stagnant. Professionals are eligible for cost-of-living raises regularly. They may receive performance-based raises or become eligible for promotions. In some cases, people may earn substantially more in the later years of a career than they did in the early years of their professional lives. Wages and benefits can increase substantially as people develop their careers with experience, education and industry connections. Grieving families may need help quantifying the lifetime earning potential of a deceased loved one. They may also need support managing the process of gathering evidence and filing formal paperwork with the courts. Working with a personal injury lawyer can help spouses, children and other surviving family members pursue the compensation they deserve after a tragic death. A successful wrongful death lawsuit can reduce the financial impact of a tragedy and give people a sense of justice when the courts determine another party was at fault for the loss of their loved one.
