What is more troubling is this seems to be the latest of various grifts, with AI only enabling larger scale screwups. The organizer once ran a local food bank that closed down after trying to raise 900k, with their few engagements on twitter being people calling it out as a scam.

Sadly for all, scams will only get more tricky to spot as access to AI becomes more commonplace. Leaving it up to ordinary people to filter through the garbage is already turning out badly. This event would never have been taken seriously without its AI enabled delusion.
