Joshua Wong, the face of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy struggle, just got another 10 years behind bars. Already locked up, he was due out soon. Beijing’s national security law made sure that didn’t happen. This is what crushing your own citizens looks like.

Joshua Wong: He was imprisoned at the age of 24. Today, he is 30. And his freedom is still nowhere in sight. What is happening to Joshua Wong is deeply disturbing. A young man who stood up for democracy and freedom in Hong Kong has been imprisoned continuously since 2020. Now, he has been sentenced to a further ten years in prison. On 5 November, the European Union issued a clear statement on the matter. It condemned the conviction as politically motivated and called for Joshua Wong's immediate release. But what is at stake goes far beyond the fate of one individual. It is about the credibility of international agreements and whether the rule of law and international commitments still carry any weight. The Sino-British Joint Declaration of 1984 and the principle of "One Country, Two Systems" were clear commitments. Hong Kong was supposed to retain its autonomy, its freedoms and its own legal system. When such agreements are not honoured, trust is severely undermined. I am therefore also taking the latest developments as a reason to draw a personal consequence: I have decided to cancel, for the time being, my trip to Hong Kong and Macau, which had already been planned and booked for July 2027, following the elections in Hong Kong. I see no point in travelling there to be presented with assurances that the principle of "One Country, Two Systems" is being upheld, while the reality for people like Joshua Wong tells a completely different story. Dialogue with China remains important. But dialogue must not mean turning a blind eye to breaches of international agreements and restrictions on fundamental freedoms. Trust is built on reliability. And reliability means, above all, honouring one's commitments. My solidarity is with Joshua Wong and all those in Hong Kong who peacefully stand up for freedom, democracy and the rule of law.

Statement on the sentencing of Joshua Wong from the foreign ministries of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
What a travesty of Justice: You sentence Joshua Wong to 10 more years in prison when he's 2 months away from being released. "There is no greater tyranny than that which is perpetrated under the shield of the law and in the name of justice." - Montesquieu theguardian.com/world/2026/n…

China lent the developing world about $1.4 trillion through its Belt and Road. Now it is lending out less than it is receiving in repayments. Developing countries are paying China a record $35 billion in debt repayments this year, with $22 billion from the 75 poorest. In 2012 only 18 countries paid China more than they borrowed. By 2023 that number reached 60. New loans dropped to about $7 billion a year. In 2024 countries paid China roughly $34 billion more than they received. In 2010 only 5% of China’s overseas loans went to countries already in serious financial trouble. By 2022 it was about 60%. China has mostly offered quiet help instead of big debt cuts, providing roughly $240 billion in emergency support including $170 billion in currency swaps. It usually gives more time to repay rather than reducing what is owed. One study found China is making only about 1.7% a year in real terms on these loans, basically break-even. The lenders are Chinese state banks, so any losses fall on Chinese taxpayers. Much of the lending is secret. Rhodium estimated about $78.5 billion was renegotiated or written off between 2020 and early 2023. China Exim alone has over $289 billion in outstanding loans, and more than half the portfolio has already started requiring principal repayments. Debt owed to Chinese state creditors is roughly 33% of GDP in Laos, 29% in Angola, and 28% in Zambia. The Belt and Road was sold as a gift of roads and ports. It is becoming the world’s largest debt-collection effort, and the bill for any losses lands in Beijing.

The continued incarceration of British citizen Jimmy Lai - along with Joshua Wong and so many other pro democracy advocates - demonstrates the cruel nature of a Communist Party Police State.
I quoted Sebastien Lai that, following a show trial, the CCP’s 20 year inhumane and unjustified sentence on his 78 year old father, British citizen, Jimmy Lai, "is a death sentence” - that his only crime is journalism; his only crime is a belief in democracy; his only crime is free speech. We mustn’t forget the hundreds of Hong Kongers in CCP jails. I called for a coordinated international response. @SupportJimmyLai

Many people in the West haven’t recognized the cruelty of this. Instead of handing down one lengthy prison sentence—which would surely generate international outrage and condemnation—the Chinese authorities have been imposing shorter sentences, one at a time, for each trumped-up charge against Joshua Wong. They use this sequence to extract confessions from Wong, waiting until he is close to completing one sentence before imposing another. They toy with his hope, only to trample on it again and again. It is clear that the Chinese authorities have no intention of releasing him. They want to ensure that Wong spends the rest of his life—or at least what should be the most productive years of his life—in prison. That is an extraordinarily cruel prospect for a young man who should have his whole life ahead of him.
Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on baseless national security charges. Wong has been in custody since November 2020, when he was 23, and faces imprisonment until late 2036, when he will be 40. To keep Hong Kong society subdued, the government appears to have adopted the tactic of stacking charges against influential pro-democracy leaders to ensure their prolonged detention. hrw.org/news/2026/11/05/hong…

China’s CCP is extending its repression beyond Tibet and into Canada. Dr. Gyal Lo fled Tibet, only to face legal intimidation on Canadian soil for exposing Beijing’s colonial boarding school system and the forced assimilation of Tibetan children. While he was speaking up for Tibet’s children at the UN in Geneva, Chinese legal documents were delivered to his home in Toronto. This is transnational repression, not a legitimate defence of “ethnic unity.” Beijing is weaponising its laws to silence critics abroad and punish anyone who exposes its abuses. Canada must not allow the CCP to export its authoritarian rule onto Canadian soil. SIGN THE PETITION. Call on Canada’s Prime Minister to stand with Dr. Gyal Lo, defend freedom of expression and stop China’s transnational repression in Canada. Silence only emboldens Beijing. #StandWithDrGyalLo #StopCCPTransnationalRepression #FreeTibet #Tibet #TibetanChildren #StopForcedAssimilation #HumanRights #Canada #CCP #China #FreedomOfExpression #TransnationalRepression
