Kid Creole’s influence on Prince 👑, is a little like Queen’s, & Shuggie Otis’s influence on Prince - generally missed in favor of the more obvious ones (Sly, JB, Carlos, Jimi, Stevie…). Thing is, the not so upfront, or obvious influences have just as much weight.

Prince really dug this one..so much this groove found its way into a few of his songs. August and crew were an influence on him especially on the Parade tour if you listen/look closely.

Kid Creole is one of the great Trickster figures of Pop music, not unlike Uncle Jam, The Maggot Overlord, George Clinton. Auggie D doesn’t get enough credit for what the Savannah Band, and his Coconuts 🥥 built in the 70’s & 80’s starting w sophisticated 40’s zoot suit nostalgia.

August Darnell is the sonic bridge personifying this shift. He took Black dance music out of the 1970s Nuyorican Latin-disco club (Dr. Buzzard) and dropped it straight into a 1980s Caribbean calypso-reggae paradise (Kid Creole). Both Prince and Michael Jackson were fascinated.

“Songs In The Key Of Life can’t be pure R&B because Stevie does some Jazzy stuff!” Ruth Brown, R&B pioneer, “Queen Of R&B”, with horn section, upright bass and swinging, jazzy pianist doing a Jump Blues-styled “Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean” This is RHYTHM AND BLUES

Some voices become part of the soundtrack of our lives. Freddie Jackson’s was one of those. 💔🕊️ His music made people feel loved, reminded us of someone special, and brought us back to moments we thought we had forgotten. What an extraordinary gift to leave the world. And every time I was in his presence, he was so sweet. That kindness will stay with me right alongside that unforgettable voice. Thank you, Freddie, for sharing your talent, your heart, and your soul with us. Thank you for the memories—and for the way you made us feel. Rest in peace to a beautiful soul and a forever voice of R&B. You will always be loved. 🤍
