1/ Today we launch an ambitious paper on the ethics of embryo screening. While the technology is new, our hopes and fears about our future children are as old as the Greek myths, including stories about Hera, goddess of fertility and the namesake of our company @herasight

Embryo selection is one of the most interesting technologies out there. If you could choose your kid’s height, would you? What about intelligence? Or more saliently, the risk of key diseases that your kid might be predisposed to? And how do we even know the tech is real? I discuss all this and more with @JonathanAnomaly , whose company @herasight is imputing polygenic risk scores for embryos based on fairly accessible inputs. The quagmire of ethical and scientific questions all this presents, I think, is ultimately tractable and offers reason for optimism

Many people out there have grown up thinking they can't have kids as they're so worried about their family risk of conditions like schizophrenia. That changes now. So cool.
Today we launch NeuroRisk, the first embryo test for autism and schizophrenia that looks for mutations in evolutionarily important genes. These mutations are individually rare but over 10% of people carry at least one mutation in this class.

I used NeuroRisk for genetic screening for myself, and found that I have a mutation in six3. This likely caused my brother's death shortly after birth, and gives ~25% risk of my own kids suffering the same. I'll be using this info in my embryo selection!

An important new innovation from Herasight: NeuroRisk. NeuroRisk identifies embryos carrying damaging mutations in evolutionarily conserved genes, which increase risk for autism, schizophrenia, and other disorders - finding cases missed by polygenic scores and known genes.

Fascinating! Embryo selection just keeps getting better because the predictors just keep improving all the time. Now, just a handful of mutations = a large IQ and intellectual disability gradient to select on.

SECRETARY RUBIO: This thumos, as the Ancient Greeks called it - the fire of passion, strength, courage, pride - is the heart of great civilization. Without it, nations lose their will to fight, to strive, to survive.

SECRETARY RUBIO: For twenty-five centuries since, the Parthenon has stood. Empires have risen and fallen beneath its shadow. And the progeny of the men who built it – the sons of Athens and Rome – have carried their civilization with them to the ends of the Earth. Two and a half centuries after the founding of the American republic halfway across the world from where I stand now, I stand here today – as the Secretary of State of that republic, and as the great-grandson of settlers who arrived in the new world from Spain – I stand here to testify to a debt that no lapse of time, no distance of space, can ever extinguish.

SECRETARY RUBIO: The history of America, the history of my country, is covered with the fingerprints of antiquity. Greece is literally carved into the architecture of our government: in the towering columns, domes and monuments across our capital city. The city where our Constitution was born – Philadelphia – is itself a Greek name.

OCTOBER 7, 2023: SHE KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO DIE. Libi Cohen-Meguri, a 22-year-old infantry officer, went to the Nova music festival. She was shot while fleeing the party. At 8:11 a.m., she called her parents and said: “I’ve been shot in the stomach, I’ve been shot in the arm, I’m losing blood. I’m going to die.” Calmly, quietly, she understood; these were the last minutes of her life. She asked her parents to call Tomer, her twin brother, and Maya, her little sister, and said: “I’m going to die. I just want you to listen to me. I love you, Yariv. You’re the best father I could have asked for. Mom, stop screaming. Just listen to me. You are the best mother we could have ever had. Don’t forget to be a good mother to Tomer and Maya after I die. Tomer, how lucky we were to live this life together. I love you. My Maya, never forget—you are the treasure of my life.” When she finished speaking, her parents told her to get out of the car, lie down on the road, and pretend to be dead. With her last bit of strength, she got out of the car and laid down on the road. “Mom, they’re coming to shoot me again,” Libi said after lying down. While her mother listened on the phone, shouts in Arabic could be heard, and then a barrage of gunfire. It didn’t stop. It kept going, until the call was disconnected. And that’s how Libi died—with demonic beasts from the pit of hell standing over her and emptying a full magazine into her body. Libi died with LOVE on her lips: love for life, love for her family, and love for her people. Her memory will forever be a blessing. NEVER FORGET. NEVER FORGIVE. NEVER AGAIN IS NOW. Israel is hunting down every single Palestinian and Hamas terrorist who participated in the October 7th Massacre—to kill them all. They’re living on “borrowed time,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Sooner or later, every one of these monsters will be found and eliminated.

Exactly right. And embryo selection for intelligence can reduce or eliminate regression to the mean
Two parents with an IQ of 130 can expect about 6 children before one scores higher than they do. Caveat: In reality, the number of children required may be a little lower, due to family history. Regression to the mean regresses toward family mean, not overall population mean.

The moment the south tower collapses on the ground:
THE SOUTH TOWER OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER HAS COMPLETELY COLLAPSED. The entire building, all 110 floors, has pancaked into the ground. Massive clouds of pulverized concrete and gypsum rush through the streets, covering tens of thousands of people in dust and obscuring Lower Manhattan altogether. Father Mychal Judge, chaplain to the FDNY, is struck by fallen debris and dies instantly. He is the first confirmed and identified death today, but there must be tens of thousands of dead.

BREAKING: Documents show De Sutter "explicitly encouraged" anti-Cofnas campaign. De Sutter, who issued and reversed Cofnas' suspension, was part of a campaign to remove Cofnas led by Belgian State-funded 'decolonial' NGOs.
I am grateful to Rector Petra De Sutter for allowing me to stay at Ghent University. I look forward to continuing to work on the project, “The Future of Liberalism,” for 60% of my working time for the remainder of my one-year postdoc. I wish to personally thank Ambassador @BillWhiteUSA. It was beyond my imagination that such a person would take an interest in the fate of a postdoc. The Ambassador responded with great support which helped to bring about a just outcome. Thank you, @USAmbToBelgium and @StateDept for defending American values. I am proud of my country.
