🚨New paper! ELARA is a guide to empirical legal research using AI agents, with an accompanying GitHub package that implements a complete workflow: from honing a research question to data generation, validation, analysis, and proofreading a draft. 1/3
ssrn.com/abstract=7349078
One key innovation is that ELARA generates data from text using sub-agents rather than API calls. This is much cheaper due to subscription discounts (~1/18 the cost at time of writing, although this can change) and permits better monitoring. 2/3
You can easily install ELARA into Claude Code/Codex by following the instructions on Github, or just copy prompts into your coding agent if you prefer. All feedback welcome! 3/3

Incredible news! Also big kudos to @ajurowkleiman who played a big part in the Direct File IRS feasibility report.
Congrats to folks at @USTreasury like @jacobsgoldin who built the free Direct File tax-filing service -- great to save taxpayers money.

📜New paper!📜
The big question for professors this past year: how useful is GPT-4 for university exams? @Dschwarcz and I ran a study on law school exams, finding that GPT-4 helps with simple multiple-choice but not complex essay questions. 1/4

Finally, we found that with good prompting (grounding with sources), GPT-4 alone outperformed on average BOTH humans alone AND humans with access to AI. Potentially bad news for legal paraprofessionals who currently do simple tasks conducive to automation. 3/4
Lots more in the paper, check it out! 4/4
