Delighted to share my new article, “Hydraulic State: Hydropower Construction and Extension of State Capacity in Contemporary China,” which was presented at the 2025 APSA Chinese Politics Mini-Conference, now published @Journal_CompPol. Why does the state reach deeper into some places than others? Drawing on 3,400+ hydropower stations in China, this study shows that big infrastructure projects like hydropower stations don’t just generate power and promote economic growth, they expand the state’s administrative and fiscal reach, leaving behind durable subnational institutions at localities long after construction ends.

See below for a thread by @sdjaffrey on one of the many fantastic articles in the @Journal_CompPol special symposium on collective vigilantism, which I co-edited with Dara Kay Cohen and @daniellefjung. Link to the special symposium here: ingentaconnect.com/content/c…
My new article in @Journal_CompPol uses data on 33,000 victims in Indonesia to show that contrary to views that link state-building to a decline in vigilantism, rapid expansion of the state’s coercive presence corresponds with more lynching. Why? ingentaconnect.com/content/c…

"Great Expectations, Great Grievances" -- my paper on the politics of complaining is finally really out, with an issue # and everything, in this month's @Journal_CompPol! Link: tinyurl.com/p6hanjxz, with thread below.
Complaining, kvetching, airing grievances …😡🤬 … We all like to do it! But what are the political consequences when citizens complain to the state? I ask this in a new paper, “Great Expectations, Great Grievances,” forthcoming in @Journal_CompPoI. shorturl.at/djyBU 1/n
