The growing rebirth of trade unionism is giving ordinary working people the political and intellectual confidence to stand up for themselves. Labour councillors must support them as we fight together for the hope of a finer, fairer Britain. morningstaronline.co.uk/arti…

Our Prime Minister's vision of ending 40 years of neo-liberalism — through public ownership, mass insourcing and decentralisation — is popular amongst the vast majority of good, decent Labour members and the British public. However, there is much to do to turn this into reality.

This is why we have assembled, as a broad team in the spirit of Labour’s historic pluralism, to help deliver this vision. Sign up to join on Sunday 6 December to help build our Agenda for Hope, so that we can move beyond the failed neo-liberal orthodoxy. tinyurl.com/London2030

A momentous day for London. I’m so excited to see our plans to transform Oxford Street becoming a reality. And this is just the beginning.

Today Israeli authorities barred me and other European elected representatives from entering the West Bank to meet Palestinian students and civil society leaders, as part of a @ProgIntl delegation. We knew that by crossing into the occupied Palestinian territories, we risked being detained, interrogated and turned away by Israeli authorities. And that, alas, is exactly what happened. For more than eight hours, we were held, interrogated and made to feel as though we had done something wrong simply by attempting to enter. The simple truth is we had done nothing wrong. We went to show our support for the Palestinian people and highlight the terrible injustice and violence being perpetrated against them. We want to ensure that people back home do not look away from the reality of what is happening. Ultimately, we went to show solidarity. But we left with an even greater determination to speak out. We will not be silenced, and we will not look away. None of us should.

The British people are sick of the neo-liberal orthodoxy — of outsourcing and privatisation, the corporate capture of our public sector, and the unimaginative, short-termist politics of ‘No’. The cutting-edge agenda outlined here offers a clear pathway to national revival.

As I have argued, just as corporate parasitism is holding Britain back, so too is hyper-factionalism stifling the potential of Labour. Only via a programme of nationalisation, insourcing and the democratic control of the economy will we achieve national renewal for the country.
We’re deeply concerned that Conference has been denied the opportunity to debate public ownership of water. That faction-driven procedure can stifle debate on essential services should concern everyone who wants Labour to be a confident, outward-looking movement.

The media euphemism that Keir Starmer has ‘vacated his seat’ is an utter travesty. Almost as if he accidentally wafted away on a gust of wind. Be honest. He u-turned on his promise to stay as an MP, deserted his constituents and his party - for what? To go and make money on the international circuit. The only thing forensic about him is the chalk outline he has left behind instead of a meaningful legacy. A fitting epitaph to the worst PM in our movements history. Believe me, it’s not personal in anyway. I wish him well. But we cannot allow the media and others to sugarcoat just how bad his govt was, by the standards OUR movement expects. We must have an honest analysis of it it. About the toxic culture it fostered, the behaviour it condoned. One that enabled a small clique to bring back Peter Mandelson into the heart of govt. To expel thousands of members for no reason. To clamp down on the right to protest. To allow a genocide to unfold and do next to nothing about it. If we don’t ask ourselves how this happened and why, if we don’t interrogate this sorry chapter - then we are doomed to repeat it. So no, let’s not sugarcoat his legacy.

When the previous leader equivocated over the bombing of innocent children, I coordinated hundreds of other Labour councillors urging for a ceasefire. This resulted in my blocking. We now have real leadership, but there is much more to do to reaffirm Britain’s moral standing.
In a difficult and dangerous world, a decade on from Brexit, there is a risk that Britain loses the confidence to lead and stand up for its values. I’m not prepared to let that happen. It is more important than ever that Britain stands for something. We have called for years for a two-state solution in the Middle East, but we must recognise that those words are meaningless unless we back them up with action. For too long, we have been hesitant to act, fearful of being accused of being anti-Israel. Today we are announcing carefully judged, targeted steps that are not aimed at the Israeli people, but at the unacceptable policies of the current Israeli government. The suffering of the Palestinian people is a scar on the conscience of the world. Innocent Palestinians, including children, continue to be killed in Gaza. And there is still a humanitarian crisis, with far too little aid getting in. The scale of destruction is hard to comprehend. More than 70,000 people lie dead - at least 20,000 of them children. Families and communities have been torn apart. Millions displaced. And the population of Gaza is now penned into just one third of the territory. I know that people across the UK feel very deeply about this issue - and so do I. Before I became Prime Minister, I said our country’s response had been too slow and simply not good enough. That’s why I committed to changing the government’s approach. I will not stand by as the horrific suffering continues to grow and the prospect of a two-state solution - the best hope for peace and stability in the region - comes under attack. More settlements have been approved under the four years of this Israeli government than in the previous 20 years. The UN has reported more than 1,500 incidents of settler violence so far this year, aimed at driving out Palestinians. And the situation is growing worse, fast. The Israeli government has now approved 104 new settlements since it took office in December 2022, and ahead of the October elections in Israel, it is allowing tenders for the construction of the E1 mega settlement to go ahead. This would cut a swathe through the heart of the West Bank - snuffing out the hope of realising a two-state solution. It cannot be allowed to happen. That’s why we are announcing a new package of tough measures to put pressure on the Israeli government: First, we will ban the trade in goods with illegal settlements in Palestine. Second, we have formally changed the view of the British government to say for the first time that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory is unlawful - independent of, but in line with, the conclusion of the international court of justice. And third, we will sanction individuals and companies that support, facilitate or profit from illegal settlements. That includes any businesses or investors that take part in the construction of the E1 settlement. In addition, we are announcing a new package of desperately needed humanitarian aid to Gaza. We are taking these steps because it is the right thing to do. I have condemned the monstrous terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 in the strongest possible terms - and continue to condemn Hamas. However, it does not justify the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza or the West Bank. The measures we are taking are about targeting illegal settlements and increasing the pressure on the Israeli government to change course. We are not imposing sanctions on Israel as a whole, which would punish the Israeli people, many of whom disagree with their government’s position. The Israeli people are not responsible for the actions of their government. And nor is the Jewish community in the UK. Blaming British Jews for the actions of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is wrong, plain and simple. And it is antisemitism, plain and simple. I met the representatives of the Jewish community just last week. I know the fear they live with day by day. My government will stop at nothing to ensure they are safe and to stamp out antisemitism in every part of our society. The measures we are announcing today are about protecting the only solution that could see the Israeli and Palestinian people living side by side in peace and security - something that people up and down the UK desperately want to see. The government I lead will keep working with our partners around the world to keep that hope alive.

As a Labour councillor, I fought hard against outsourcing — a form of corporate parasitism which squeezes services and workers to enrich a tiny few. It was an honour, therefore, to be invited to the launch of @unisontheunion and @RMTunion’s fantastic @InsourceNowGB campaign.

This photo takes me right back. Working as a home carer for Stockport Council. It was my first proper job. A special job. But one of the toughest I've ever done. I know what it’s like to wash someone, cook for them, and make time to actually listen to them before rushing off to the next call with the clock ticking. I know how it feels to graft hard day and night doing tough, physical shifts for wages I struggled to get by on. That's why I've always fought for a fairer deal for social care. And I'm proud we started laying the foundations for change through the Employment Rights Act with the framework for the first ever fair pay agreement for adult social care workers. But that’s also why the Prime Minister's announcement today matters so much. A National Care Service could be genuinely transformative. For decades, governments have kicked this issue down the road because they have seen it as too risky, too difficult and too complicated. That changes today.

Despite the hyperfactionalism which has damaged Labour — @andyburnham, many others and I were blocked by an NEC ignorant of our historic pluralism — it remains a great vehicle of hope. There are fantastic members seeking to return Labour to our roots; I am proud to support them.

For too long, we’ve been told that ending rough sleeping will take decades or even that it's impossible. I'm not having that. This is something a government can fix if it chooses to. Today, I’m choosing to. The Passage are an organisation leading the way on this - I was proud to chat to their team this morning.

In response to the then-leadership’s equivocation over war crimes in Gaza, I coordinated hundreds of Labour colleagues urging for a ceasefire. After over a decade as a Labour councillor, I was blocked by the party’s NEC from restanding because of this.

I will never retract my public support for innocent children, nor from doing what little I can to ensure Britain stands as a moral leader in an increasingly chaotic world. @andyburnham’s apology is a welcome corrective — there is still much more our country can and ought to do.
