Should the I-35 through the Westside Remain, be Realigned, be Removed, or something else completely?
Kansas City is looking for feedback and ideas to Reconnect the Westside here: reconnectwestside.com/commun…
The @UMKC junior year urban planning and design studio recently reimagined the North Loop as a BRT transit way and TOD site for the Bistate Transit Corridor. Check out their work below!

You already know our answer!
But the great thing about removing the North Loop is that we don’t need “unlimited funding.” For a little up front planning and infrastructure work, we can restore a vibrant, revenue-generating neighborhood and create a financial net positive for KC.
When the Beyond the Loop study was underway in 2017-18, KCK officials opposed the plan. Today those officials are gone, and new leadership is interested in reimagining I-70.

ALT Text from the GoDotte mobility plan: I-70 north of I-670: Across the river in KCMO, the Imagine Downtown KC 2030 Strategic Plan envisions a reimagined North Loop (I-70 in KCMO), proposing removal of the freeway and transforming the facility into an at-grade urban boulevard. Should this project advance, the UG should consider examining the utility of the remaining I-70 section north of I-670 and west of the KCMO North Loop in order to reconnect Downtown KCK to its reimagined urban waterfront along the Kansas River.
Here are some images of what that connection used to look like. 6th Street Trafficway was the main thoroughfare leading to the Intercity Viaduct, and Independence Avenue dead-ended at Grand. The NLN vision illustrates a potential continuous Independence Avenue
Despite (or perhaps because of?) significant growth in Kansas City's downtown, North Loop traffic volumes are decreasing steadily for two decades.
Contrast this with the common traffic engineering assumption that traffic will grow by 1.5% per year...
Replying to @WesKCMO
A lot has changed in the 7 years since the Beyond the Loop PEL, including new leadership in KCK. Their recently adopted goDotte mobility plan talks about using the north loop as a catalyst to remove redundant sections of highway to better connect downtown KCK to the river.
At the @godowntownkc luncheon @JeffSpeckFAICP says the North Loop was an “Oops”
We agree!
The North Loop destroyed a huge swath of our downtown. North Loop Neighbors is an advocacy coalition to rebuild what was lost.
