Police Pursuit (Oak Brook) Oak Brook PD was in an active police chase with a suspect vehicle wanted in an auto theft. The pursuit began northbound on Spring Rd at 16th St. It traveled on Frontage Rd eastbound and came out onto York Street, then eastbound Roosevelt Rd. JUST IN: A Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District firefighter who also served as a Marine has died after suffering a medical emergency during a scheduled training exercise in Gilberts Wednesday, fire officials said. Emergency crews responded Wednesday to the Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District’s Station 1, 11 East Higgins Road in Gilberts, for a report of an unresponsive firefighter in distress. Emergency radio traffic indicated the firefighter was not breathing and CPR was in progress as an ambulance took him to the hospital. The fire district said in a statement Wednesday that the firefighter had a serious medical emergency during a scheduled training exercise. Fellow firefighters on scene began medical care immediately and the firefighter was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, the district said. Neighboring fire departments covered the district’s stations and emergency service to residents was not interrupted. “Our firefighters train together every day for moments like this, and today they were there for one of their own,” Rutland-Dundee Fire Protection District Fire Chief Christopher Reedy said. Reedy said the department’s focus was on the firefighter, his family and the members of the department and asked everyone to keep them in their thoughts. The fire district announced Sunday that the firefighter, Greg Witt, died as a result of the medical emergency. Witt joined the district in January 2019 and was also a U.S. Marine. “Greg was a member of our family,” Reedy said. “He served his country as a Marine and served this community as a firefighter, and he did both with honor.” Reedy said the department’s hearts are with Witt’s family and every member of the department who served alongside him and asked that they be given “the time and space they need to grieve.” Funeral arrangements have not been made and the district said it will share information once the family is ready to make them public. A moped driver was ejected and seriously injured after an Illinois State Police trooper exiting DuPage Airport collided with the moped in West Chicago Wednesday afternoon. An on-duty Illinois State Police trooper was exiting the airport grounds onto Tower Road around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday when the trooper collided with a moped and the moped driver was ejected, state police said. Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived and the moped driver was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. The trooper was not physically injured, state police said. The Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation is investigating the crash. The identity and age of the moped driver have not been released. A female victim was found dead inside the garage of a home after the residence became fully engulfed in flames near Lily Lake late Friday. The Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District and Kane County Sheriff's Office responded around 11:55 p.m. Friday to a home in the 43W500 block of Otter Lane in unincorporated Kane County for a report of a structure fire. Firefighters arrived and found heavy flames showing from all four sides of the home, according to fire department radio traffic. Fire department radio traffic indicated water tender trucks were called to the scene because the neighborhood has no fire hydrants. Firefighters had to operate from the outside in defensive mode due to the extensive flames. Firefighters located a deceased female inside the garage, the sheriff’s office said Monday. The sheriff’s office Investigations Division is working with the fire protection district, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force and the Kane County Coroner’s Office. The sheriff’s office said the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the task force were brought in as part of a comprehensive effort to determine the circumstances and their involvement should not be taken as an indication that a criminal act or arson occurred. “At this time, no conclusions have been reached, and no possibilities have been ruled out,” the sheriff’s office said.
