The Taliban's Architecture of Erasure = Gender Apartheid. In Herat, women are disappearing from public life. Not by decree, but by fear. The Taliban calls it a dress code. But last week they detained two women and a girl under 18 wearing full face veils. The rule was never the point. The point is erasure. You don't have to ban women from public life. You just make being seen dangerous enough that they stay home. Control who is allowed to appear in public & you have quietly decided who counts as a person at all. This is what gender apartheid looks like in practice. Farahnaz Forotan, Kaaj's founder, and I edited this investigation, and we are grateful to the brave reporters inside Afghanistan who risked everything to report it.
