10 July 1960. Kampala, Uganda. The radio crackled with news from Congo. Independent for barely days, the new nation was already burning. The first trucks arrived carrying Belgian refugees, women with dusty children, frightened eyes. At Makerere, young Ugandan nationalists watched in silence. The Congo Mirror: Uganda's Lesson in Independence - 1960 They had been celebrating Patrice Lumumba's rise, passing around mimeographed copies of his speeches like sacred texts. In Makerere's dining halls, in the backrooms of Asian shops, the young men of the Uganda National Congress had shouted about independence as though it were their birthright. Then the trucks came. Belgian families, exhausted and displaced, were served posho by nurses at hastily prepared refugee centres. It was the first time many of those young Ugandans had seen white people as refugees, not masters. The reversal shook something deep. The elders pointed to Congo as proof that Uganda was not ready. "You see what happens when power comes too fast?" they warned. They had watched the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya, the racial violence elsewhere. Their caution was born of experience. But the young nationalists drew a different lesson. Sitting with his comrades at sunset, one of them, a young man from Gulu, whispered what many were thinking: "We must learn from this." Lumumba's vision had drowned in vengeance and tribal rivalry within days of independence. The mutiny of the Force Publique, the Belgian intervention, the secession of Katanga, it had all unfolded with terrifying speed. The lesson was not that freedom should wait. The lesson was that freedom without institutions was a house of cards. The images from those July days stayed with them: families stopped at roadblocks, others fleeing across Lake Albert in dugout canoes. Uganda's government set up refugee beds; Kenya offered help. But what lingered was the question that followed every young nationalist into the years ahead: When Uganda's turn came, would they be any different? The Congo was a mirror, and what those young men saw in it was their own potential for both triumph and disaster. They would need institutions, not just heroes. They would need a nation, not just a flag. What does it mean when a generation of young nationalists, burning with hope, watches a neighbouring revolution consume itself within days, and resolves, in the silence of that witnessing, to build something different? The Congo crisis of July 1960 was Uganda's unspoken teacher. The refugees came. The young men watched. The lesson was absorbed not in speeches but in the quiet understanding that independence without preparation was a catastrophe waiting to happen. They would remember those dusty trucks and frightened children. They would remember Lumumba's rise and fall. And they would try, in the years ahead, to build a Uganda that would not break. #ughistory @GovUganda @VoiceOfCongo @PrimatureRDC @TopCongo @presidence_rdc #DRC @belgiumMFA @belguiminuganda @belgiqueRDCongo

Why?
