Those of us that queued up in Biwi at a ‘fuel-lord’ house know that 2011 was one of the worst crises ever. It’s easy to forget because we are ‘Malawians’; however, the painful cost of that crisis is the memory of 18 people that were killed during protests. May they rest in peace.
Chat, I was too young in 2011, is this fuel crisis worse?

For example A orders a shirt for K30,000 and sells it for K70,000. She sells almost all her stock in two weeks. B orders the same shirt, sells it for K130,000, but takes a month to sell just 5 pieces both make sales, but who is really winning, A or B?

Dollars entering Malawi do not create new money; instead, scarcity, supply, and demand shift only the cost of buying the dollar. Fuel at the pump has stayed at 6k during the crisis, while the black market climbed to roughly 20k. That 14k gap did not add new money to the economy; it merely shifted funds between pockets. This creates ripple effects, and you have noted one: the decline in your salary’s purchasing power. People grow poorer here if wages do not rise by comparable margins. You can see this as a vicious cycle.
Suppose 100 million usd enters Malawi in October. At an official exchange rate of MK1,733 per dollar, that translates to approximately MK173.3 billion. Under forward contracts, the kwacha equivalent could be as high as MK250 billion. But actually, this money is exchanged on the black market, where the same 100 million usd fetches MK400 billion. This raises important questions about monetary policy, liquidity and inflation. Where does the additional MK150 billion come from when foreign exchange is traded at these rates? Does this create additional money in circulation, or is existing liquidity simply changing hands? If new kwacha is created to finance these transactions, what are the implications for the money supply, inflation and the purchasing power of the kwacha? Ultimately, how does this affect the ordinary Malawian? When more kwacha chases the same goods and services, does it put further pressure on prices and weaken the purchasing power of our salaries? How does the Reserve Bank account for these transactions, and what does this mean for its efforts to control inflation and stabilise the kwacha? I am genuinely open to learning. I want to understand the mechanics of how these transactions affect the money in our economy and, ultimately, how far can an ordinary Malawian’s salary or whatever they earn from their hustles go?!
