I’m expected to be at #DDW2025 in San Diego in 3 weeks, the premier international conference for my field, a conference I have attended and presented at nearly every year since I’ve been a gastroenterologist. However, as a trans women who has been public in her criticism of the current American administration, there is a real chance that I could be detained or even renditioned by US authorities under the flimsiest of pretences, without the protection of the rule of law or any expectation of due process. A 4 day trip to California could end up as a months long journey through detention facilities, or even being sent off to have my head shaved in El Salvador And it’s look more and more like tempting fate to follow through on my plans to attend this year as well, even more so given the recent advice from the Canadian Association of University Teachers It may be time for a country wide boycott of us-held conferences until America comes to its collective senses
