For anyone asking why Sway matters to UK rap, you have to understand the era
Before streaming, TikTok or a huge digital infrastructure for UK artists, Sway was selling mixtapes himself, building independently and getting videos onto Channel U
He won Best Hip-Hop at the MOBOs in 2005 while still unsigned, then released This Is My Demo independently and earned a Mercury Prize nomination
He helped prove UK rappers could build their own audience, tell distinctly British stories and succeed without waiting for the industry to validate them. That history matters.
Rest in power ❤️

This by a country mile was an innovator.
Up your speed. Little Derek. Following fashion.
Bro he was a dope rapper. The visuals for the time always had character.
He looked so polished at the time that we were all forced to raise our game.
On top of that and most importantly a fucking great person.
Love and blessings to the family every time.
I genuinely cannot believe what I’ve seen today.
Cherish the blood clart people Ina ur life.

We’re deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sway. 🕊️
In 2005, he made MOBO history, beating global heavyweights including 50 Cent and The Game to win Best Hip-Hop Act - a huge moment for Sway and UK Hip Hop.
Proud to have him as part of our history. Our love goes out to his family, loved ones and fans. ❤️
