I had a good conversation with @AngelaRayner yesterday.
I raised the points the @fbunational has been making throughout the summer and before: we need investment in our fire and rescue services, including the commitment to 5,000 additional firefighters, to meet the growing risks our communities face.
We also discussed the emergency wildfire summit called for by the FBU, which the government has committed to. We need to use it to build resilience and ensure we are better prepared for wildfires, flooding and the extreme weather events we as firefighters are increasingly dealing with.
This summer’s fires are another reminder that this is about having the personnel and resources in place before disaster strikes - not after.
It is awful to see the devastation the fires across the West Midlands, and the country, have caused. It must have been terrifying for residents to see the fires take hold so quickly yesterday. I am very grateful to the firefighters, local resilience partners and all the first responders who evacuated people to safety – a number of firefighters were taken to hospital as a result of incidents yesterday, and I pay tribute to their bravery and commitment.
Our firefighters are working in incredibly difficult conditions and putting themselves at risk to keep others safe, and we will back them all the way. As the Prime Minister @andyburnham has said, we will make sure our fire services have the resources they need from us and our support to deal with the unprecedented risks being driven by these heatwaves.
As well support on the ground now, we will hold a summit bringing together fire chiefs, the National Fire Chiefs’ Council, the @fbunational and other key organisations to look at our future response.
To the residents affected, particularly those who lost their homes and their life’s possessions to fire – we will work with the mayor @RichParkerLab and local leaders to make sure you are supported.
Yesterday’s fires show just how devastating the impact of fires can be and how quickly they can take hold. I’d ask people to take extra care when they’re out enjoying themselves this weekend.
Don’t risk it – BBQs, open fires, even litter such as cigarette ends or glass bottles are a fire risk at this time. Simple choices can help prevent wildfires before they start.

Firefighters control are facing an impossible dilemma. With no fire engines available, it's been a case of picking and choosing which incidents they send firefighters to.
Temporary army and aircraft support won't fix chronic underfunding. We need proper long-term investment.

Proposed changes to how Cheltenham West fire station is crewed is extremely dangerous and must be fought. A link to an online petition is in the comments below.

🚨 Gloucestershire County Council wants to strip nighttime fire cover from Cheltenham West.
Yet, with tens of thousands of new houses being built right next to Cheltenham, these cuts will put firefighter and public safety at risk.
I will say this as an FBU official. Thank god who ever religion they may be that there has not been a serious firefighter injury or death this continuous heat wave. It’s time to fund the fire service appropriately and stop reckless cuts that can and will cost members lives!
Replying to @NiftySAR1 @ClevelandFBU
My Brothers @ClevelandFBU will be fighting this and the support from @Kent_FBU will be there throughout.
This is across the UK too spreading and unstoppable. It needs funding properly.

Imagine fighting a wildfire under the blazing sun, with ground temperatures of 100°C, while wearing a ski jacket.
Dorset and Wiltshire firefighters are at risk of severe heat exhaustion, responding to the New Forest fire in their heavy, padded structural PPE.
My Ipaper article from 2022 still relevant as Day Crewed firefighters are pushed to their very limits in this current heatwave. The calls and standbys are relentless with little or no rest as they work 9-6 at station and on call from home at night! inews.co.uk/news/wildfire-wa…

Good to meet with Sadiq today. I’m grateful for his continued support for London’s firefighters and recognition of the professionalism and dedication of @fbunational members.
As the risks from wildfires and extreme weather grow, firefighters need the resources, staffing and support to keep Londoners safe.
Behind every wildfire, grass fire and emergency response is a firefighter working in some of the toughest conditions imaginable.
I was grateful to catch up with Steve Wright, General Secretary of the @fbunational, and to thank London's firefighters for their dedication during this heatwave.
Their professionalism and commitment keep Londoners safe.
Thanks @fbunational this has been a superb campaign by Kent officials and the mobilisation by members has been immense. So proud of Kent members right now.
I’m honoured and proud to be Region 11 Chair and Kent Brigade Chair today what a fantastic membership we have. Thanks to @UnionSteveW for attending it’s so appreciated.

After hundreds of firefighters turned out at Kent County Council today, Kent CFO backtracked on plans to close Grain fire station.
The FBU welcome this, but four stations and 63 firefighter jobs remain under threat.
Industrial action stays on the table until cuts are scrapped.
