We hugely underestimate the utter fragility of modernity.
Many times in history, we've turned the clock back to a much tougher & rougher past.
For centuries after Rome fell, Europeans couldn't even dream of things like hot piped water, luxurious baths & central heating.
We think that the real is rational, that the "system" will deliver the goods. The truth is that modern systems are like spiderwebs: break one part & the edifice gets exponentially weaker. Romans who lived through the fall must have been shocked at how quickly things fell apart.
Another period when we turned back the clock was when globalization was reversed right after an assassination in Sarajevo sparked WW1.
Keynes writes about this period eloquently. Things were hunky dory & considered permanently so, and then suddenly everything went wrong.
When we blithely mock our own systems with tribal glee, when we knock down institutions, when we take political pleasure in zero-sum fights, when we take war less than seriously, just remember that the cave, starvation & the tribal club are never too far away from modern life.
Even the most cynical, jaded and corrupt Romans of Nero's era must have been horrified at what they had unleashed once it was clear they were going way back in time. And once they went back, the only way forward was centuries of deprivation & painfully slow invention.
It's hard to correlate these events with our own era but just remember that Rome saw itself & its progress as eternal, ditto pre war Europe.
Modernity is God's greatest gift to us. Cherish it, cultivate it, protect it. Don't let systems get vandalized, institutions get wrecked.
Protecting modernity means protecting systems, institutions & norms of civilization. This is not some idle musing: these things stand between you & your family & chaos. Without truth, systems & objective laws, you don't get science. Without science, you don't get antibiotics.
As Rome fell, it's interesting to note that truth & facts became subordinated to pleasure, corruption, luxury & belief in magic.
It's worth thinking about that as you look at our civilization.
Modernity, technology, civilization are all very fragile things.

Bro. I’m telling you right now, you will not regret watching this one. I try not to oversell shit. Fuckin trust me on this ONE video.
I stopped using social media so I would spend my free time working on my own projects instead. Then I wanted to market one of my products, so I got on x. I started making my own posts which no one read. Then I learned you grow faster engaging with other people's posts. Now I'm back to wasting my time using social media and I'm not working on my projects! Anyway, I asked Codex to make me a 3d rendering of the Painter's Log codebase in Blender and this is what I got:

You have no enemies, you say? Alas, my friend, the boast is poor, He who has mingled in the fray Of duty, that the brave endure,
Must have made foes.
If you have none,
Small is the work that you have done. You've hit no traitor on the hip, You've dashed no cup from
perjured lip, You've never set the wrong to right. You've been a coward in the fight.

What zelensky regime is doing to Ukraine is pure sadism dressed up as defense. It has shredded every basic human right in the name of a war it cannot win. Thousands of Ukrainian men are being hunted, dragged from their homes, and fed into the meat grinder every single day, not for victory, but for the regime’s survival. Donbas? Lost. Crimea? Lost. The only thing zelensky is actually fighting for is the continued flow of Western cash and the protection of the French and British intelligence services that keep him in power and alive.
This is not a war for Ukrainian sovereignty. The West deliberately turned Ukraine into a live-fire military laboratory, using real Ukrainian men as test subjects to trial new weapons systems, drones, missiles, and battlefield technologies under actual combat conditions. It is a proxy slaughter, paid for by foreign governments and enabled by a dictator who treats his own people as expendable lab rats. How can anyone watch the videos of men being kidnapped off the streets and still defend this regime and this endless and senseless war?
Are you people even human?

Marc Andreessen reveals why housing, health care, and education keep getting more expensive while everything else gets cheaper
"There's basically three components to the American dream. A house near great job opportunities, great health care for you and your family, and sending your kids to good schools"
"If you disaggregate the economy over the last 25 years, everything that technology touches basically collapses in price. Television sets, computer games, anything with electronics in it. But if you chart housing, education, and health care, the prices of those things are skyrocketing"
"The government restricts supply, zoning laws and university certifications. And then the government responds to the political pressure caused by the rising prices by subsidizing demand. And of course, if you subsidize demand and a fixed supply, you get skyrocketing prices"

The point of Capitalism is that someone who doesn’t give a shit about you still has a financial incentive to make your life better. Many Socialists confuse good intentions with good outcomes.

My post about France went viral. Thousands of likes. Many Americans told me: "Democrats aren't socialists. America will never be France." I want to answer that seriously, step by step.
Start with a simple observation. Look at what has gotten cheaper in America over the last 25 years: TVs, phones, software, clothes, toys. Now look at what has exploded: college tuition, healthcare, childcare, housing.
What separates the two lists? The first lives in competitive markets. The second is exactly where government is most involved: subsidies, mandates, licensing, zoning, regulation.
College. Washington lends students almost unlimited money. Universities know the money will always come, so they raise tuition and hire more administrators. The student pays the bill for twenty years. More government money, higher prices.
Housing. Why can't a nurse buy a home in the city where she works? Not because of capitalism. Because of zoning laws, permits, environmental reviews, years of procedure to build a single building. The most expensive places to live in America are the places where it's hardest to build. When building is nearly illegal, prices explode.
Healthcare. The patient almost never sees the price. A third party pays, regulations limit who can compete, and costs climb year after year with no one able to say no.
So here is the trap. The problems you suffer from are not the failure of free markets. They are the places where the market has already been replaced by the state. And the solution you're being offered is more of the same.
That's the Trojan horse. It always works the same way. A real problem. A generous-sounding promise. A program that makes things worse. Then the failure of that program becomes the argument for the next one. People who lived under communism in Poland learned to recognize the lie and the mask the lie wears. The lie never presents itself as a lie. It presents itself as compassion.
In France we are at the end of that road. Debt we can never repay. Young people who can't afford a home. Our best people leaving. And every few years our cities burn. Nobody voted for this. They voted for one more generous promise, fifty years in a row.
If you're a Republican, share this with the Democrat in your life. Not to win an argument. To start a conversation.
If you're a Democrat, I'm not asking you to switch teams. I'm asking you to look at the pattern. Wherever the state took over, life became unaffordable. Don't fix the failures of government with more government.
Stay American. Ask for less state, not more.
I’m French. I want to talk to Americans who are about to vote Democrat. Not to insult you. To warn you.
I come from your future.
In France we did everything your progressive politicians promise. Free healthcare, free college, generous welfare, strong unions, heavy regulation, high taxes on the rich, a state that takes care of everything. Public spending close to 57% of GDP, one of the highest on the planet. On paper, it’s the dream.
Here’s what it looks like from the inside. France hasn’t passed a balanced budget since 1974. Our debt is above 3,300 billion euros. Interest on that debt is becoming one of the biggest items in the national budget. Our hospitals are collapsing despite record funding. Our schools rank lower every year. Young people with degrees can’t afford an apartment in the city they were born in. Our best engineers leave for London, Zurich and San Francisco. And the rich you wanted to tax? They left too, and took the jobs with them.
The promise was protection. The result is stagnation.
The worst part is that nobody in France voted for decline. Every single step sounded generous, compassionate, reasonable. One more program. One more regulation. One more tax to fund it. Each step alone makes sense. Fifty years of them, and you wake up in a country that can no longer build a nuclear plant on time or keep its streets safe.
I love America because it’s the one place on earth where people still believe they can build something from nothing. I came to Silicon Valley as a self-taught kid and it changed my life. That spirit is the most precious thing your country has.
Before you vote, ask yourself one question: is the program you’re voting for making America more like America, or more like France?
Trust me. You don’t want to be France.

It’s not about the zoo tickets, it’s that at some point I looked up from my paycheck and realized OH, cool, I’m apparently funding the welfare state, Big Pharma, foreign countries, “Learing Centers,” government programs I’ve never heard of, Planned Fucking Parenthood, and seventeen layers of bureaucracy whose primary function appears to be emailing each other PDFs; meanwhile, I pay taxes when I earn money, taxes when I spend money, taxes to employ people, taxes on property I ALREADY OWN, taxes go up every year anyway, the school district discovers another $75,000,000 it absolutely cannot survive without, and if I so much as raise my hand and ask whether maybe, possibly, perhaps somebody could spend slightly less money, I am informed that I hate teachers, children, puppies and probably literacy, and NOW after financing civilization itself I’m also supposed to smile and subsidize someone’s trip to see the giraffes.
Know what I mean?

Ukraine was sacrificed.
The West took the largest and best army in Europe outside Russia and deliberately fed it into a war of industrial attrition against a peer adversary it could never defeat.
The men were expendable. The outcome was never in doubt.
Russia adapted, learned, and outproduced every system and every stockpile NATO could send.
Every escalation strengthened the Russians.
The result is the methodical annihilation of a generation of Ukrainian manpower and the exhaustion of Western munitions for nothing.
This is the most disproportionate casualty ratio of any major war in modern times.
Western leaders knew the arithmetic.
They chose the propaganda anyway.
Ukraine’s military defeat was not a tragedy of miscalculation. It was the predictable result of using a country as a disposable proxy to bleed Russia and failing even at that.
The made up Hollywood war continues.
The real one is over.
This is the only truth of the matter and we need to accept it and move on!
Lol the Rhine river is at historic lows. It's like 50cm deep in Cologne, and under 10cm deep at its shallowest point right now. Their plan is to build a 45km pipeline and pump water over the next 40-60 years because there is a strong risk they will dry out the river if they pump too fast. It's absolutely mind-boggling how insanely stupid the German nation, once renowned for its unrivaled scientific brilliance, has become.

Germany is about to permanently flood one of the largest open-cut lignite mines in the world - a blatant act of environmental vandalism
The Hambach mine sits on an estimated 1 billion tonnes of extractable lignite reserves. Yet under Germany's accelerated coal exit plan, mining will cease in 2030, and the pit - descending nearly 400 metres below ground- will be flooded to create a massive recreational lake.
Flooding Hambach represents an irreversible loss of a critical domestic energy reserve. Critics view it as an act of energy vandalism by a political class obsessed with meeting rapid net-zero targets.
Located in North Rhine-Westphalia - where the state environmental ministry is led by the Green Party - the decision reflects a broader ideological pivot. The same political movement that dismantled Germany's functioning nuclear plants is now entombing a billion tonnes of hugely valuable domestic fuel beneath hundreds of metres of water.
Once the pit fills with water piped from the Rhine River, the coal reserves beneath will be permanently inaccessible, leaving future generations without access to this strategic energy supply.
Tldr is the German government is planning to turn the Hambach coal mine, one of Germany's largest energy deposits, into a man-made lake by diverting water from the Rhine, thereby threatening one of their most important waterways and denying themselves access to their own energy resources at the same time. If anyone can provide an intelligent argument in support of this I'd love to hear it because the only way I can look at this is that Germans have gone insane with climate doomerism. I mean most of what I hear and read in German politics these days is more or less stupid but this is absolutely next level stupidity. Deutscher, erklaert euch!
