He didn't win it. He took it. And no one else has ever taken it like that. Not even close. 2016 was not voted. It was declared. Messi has 8 Ballon d'Ors. But show me ONE where he won a Champions League AND an international trophy in the same season AND finished as the top goals plus assists for his team and the tournament. You cannot. Because it never happened. 2011? No international trophy. 2015? No international trophy. 2019? No Champions League, no international trophy. 2021? No Champions League, finished 5th in La Liga. 2023? No Champions League, playing in a farmers league in America. Most of his awards were from the illusion. The illusion that he looked better than everyone, so they gave it to him. Dribbling in midfield. No trophies that matter. 2016 was different. 2016 was real football. Champions League winner. Top scorer of the Champions League. Euro winner. Top assister of the Euros. Top G/A for Portugal. Top G/A for Real Madrid. He carried two teams on his back to two titles in one summer. Wolfsburg hat trick. Winning penalty in the final. Hungary to save his country. Wales to send them to the final. Crying on a stretcher and still coaching from the touchline. That is not illusion. That is pure greatness. So when France Football counted: Number 1: Cristiano Ronaldo 745 points Number 2: Lionel Messi 316 points A margin of 429 points. The biggest ever in football history. It was not a victory. It was a coronation. It was football correcting itself and saying: No debate. This year, this sport, belongs to one man. 2008 was talent. But 2016? 2016 proved that talent can be gifted, but greatness is taken. And no Messi Ballon d'Or season will ever come close to it.
