I fully support having red lines when it comes to genocide but the problem is that maximalist impulses within DSA will just move on to something else next.
You don’t support abolishing the police and prisons right now?
Sorry, but you’re a fascist and we can’t endorse you.

This is not something that is “mysterious” at all to YIMBYs, we understand it completely. YIMBYs just make the bold claim that neighborhoods shouldn’t be arbitrarily preserved in amber just because a few people with too much time on their hands like a specific tree or something
Replying to @MattBruenig
It's incredible to me that YIMBYs find it mysterious that people don't like change in their neighborhoods.
"Explains a lot about why nobody wants to build housing."
Was this not obvious to you before?

Matthew Yglesias appears to be a bit miffed that Lula won in Brazil.
Every other stupid thing about this take aside, this election is quite infamous partly because Meta, Twitter, and Trump tried so hard to manipulate the outcome. Has Matty made any comments about that...?

That American citizens are significantly less likely to receive disaster relief if they live in states that didn't vote for the regime in power should be treated as a major scandal.

I really think everyone needs to pay attention to this cordinated campaign to delegimatize Muslim Americans - not just as citizens but as humans.
These increasingly hysterical attacks are a prelude to Republicans bringing us to a very, very dark place after the election.

Can’t even begin to imagine the reasoning here, but obviously quite funny that this observation only comes after the Lula & Student List wins yesterday, and not any of the internationalized right wing victories of the past year

Left-NIMBYISM is much funnier. Yeah, i'm a socialist, except in the case of housing, where I believe in zealously protecting the rights of property owners to form a cartel at the expense of the poor. Let's build some parking lots in city centers for suburbanites to park in!

Trying to wrap my mind around how absolutely heinous this order must have been for the **head of the IDF** to not be able to stomach going through with it.

We celebrate Lula's re-election not because Lula is a friend of Ukraine - he clearly isn't - but as a victory against the far right, against authoritarianism and against Trump.
Sending warm greetings to left-wing and labour movement forces in Brazil that have stood with Ukraine

Not an overstatement to say Lula winning could save the planet by protecting the Amazon

The way NIMBYs throw the word "deregulation" around you'd think the main fight in housing was over bringing back asbestos insulation instead of whether a single-family homeowner should be able to build an apartment building under a basically otherwise unchanged regulatory regime

The point is we do not presently live under socialism, so the question before us is:
Is it good for the cause of socialism if socialists work very hard to make markets work poorly, and make life harder for the working class, and take credit for doing so?
Or is it good for the cause of socialism that socialists govern competently and deliver things people need, while attempting at the same time to expand the share of output directed by the public sector?
Personally, I am not persuaded that “make things worse for people, on purpose,” is a good strategy for winning converts to the cause of socialism.
