The average publican makes around 12-20p profit per pint. Pubs are one big tax collection service in the eyes of The Treasury. It’s time this age old trade is supported instead of being targeted by clueless politicians. The Government takes TEN times what the publican does.

Just a reminder that £2 of every £10 you spend in hospitality goes straight to HMRC that’s before the venue has paid for the product, the staff to serve it, the rent on the venues to serve it in, the gas/ electricity to cook it…it’s endless. #CUTVAT

If you want to tackle cost of living the single quickest way to do so is bring down the cost of eating out, food and drink. The easiest way to do this is to #CutVat to 13% - this brings us in line with Europe its will bring down COL, bring down down inflation, brings up employment and in turn brings in higher tax returns through growth lower interest rates and through a more vibrant economy. Until this happens the industrial action will only get bigger #TaxedOut #Hospitality #NoLabourMPs
'In a world of uncertainty and upheaval, tackling the cost of living will remain our focus' Chief political correspondent Henry Zeffman told #BBCBreakfast about the message from the Prime Minister at his first Cabinet meeting of 2026, despite events in Venezuela bbc.co.uk/news/politics

The biggest tax barrier for hospitality is VAT, by bringing us in line with the rest of Europe, the chancellor has the chance to save thousands of small business and jobs. Cut to inheritance tax mean nothing to most people. #cutVAT apple.news/AxBAnruJ2SjiLpTiq…

We need an Emergency VAT cut to 13% in line with Europe and the rates issue investigated. Full stop. To stop a complete decimation of our industry in the Dark Quarter #CutVat #TaxedOut #Hospitality

Everyone seems to be turning on this government now. Hospitality, retail, farmers, X users, the unions. They are making life in the UK so hard & pretty much unbearable 😔 Everyone is miserable. Is a nation strike on the cards?

Extend the flat rate VAT scheme to those hospitality businesses that want to opt in. It’s the easiest, quickest and less bureaucratic way to support hospitality, high streets, towns & cities. Boost employment & jobs for the young & a boost for neighbouring venues such as retail.

If hospitality allows another botched back room deal between trade bodies & Government then it’s game over. A few more pence off rates will be the tool for @UKLabour to say … we listened, we’re supporting. The only long term meaningful solution is a hospitality VAT rate.

Common sense went out the door when some people creating policy, thought they knew better than the businesses owners themselves, and on many occasions they never wanted to listen to the real impact and damage that certain policy decisions would have on the businesses.

"This cost will be passed directly onto consumers, drive inflation & undermine the Gov't’s aim to reduce the cost of living." Gov't has gone back on its word & introduced a holiday tax. People travelling in the UK will face up to £518m in additional tax. ukhospitality.org.uk/holiday…

The tax increase for businesses employing part-time workers in hospitality was about 75%, and is leaving our sector #TaxedOut. At tomorrow's Budget we need to see real change for hospitality. Lower business rates, fix NICs and cut VAT. Hear @UKHospKate on @TimesRadio 👇

Today’s inflation figures are welcome but they do highlight the disproportionate impact eating out and crucially hotel prices have on the figures - they can drive inflation down or cause it to spike. Should give Chancellor pause for thought - a holiday tax will be damaging

November is Mens Mental Health Awareness Month. To me another reminder that our pubs, bars and clubs are more than just commercial spaces. They are places of connection, community and belonging. Their decline leaves a gap in how we support mental health and social cohesion.
