Here's S.P. Mookerjee, a figure beloved of the current government, on the importance of civil rights in his Presidential Address to the All-India Civil Liberties Conference in 1951 (full text: dspace.gipe.ac.in/xmlui/bits…):

"This is a state for whom the only currency that matters is raw power. This is a state that recognises no constraints of law, liberty and morality. This is a state that will make a mockery of democracy and deliberation. This is a state whose psychological principle is fear."

"...the way to prepare undergraduates to become successful founders is not to give them some new curriculum focused on "entrepreneurship". It's to do what universities already do best — to teach them computer science and mechanical engineering and molecular biology."

Very disappointed to see that a free resource by the @DerekBokCenter that I've used for years to help prepare my teaching fellows is now hidden behind a ProQuest paywall. It used to be available here: vimeo.com/104311202

"I have no political imagination for how this changes. I see fifty shades of the right... it's about political culture, and political culture can be repaired. But politically, I still don't see the forces capable of repairing things." haaretz.com/israel-news/2026…?

Prediction: policemen will suddenly get even richer. Direct access to financial data on the flimsiest pretext will result in extortion on an industrial scale.
The LS has passed the Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026. And now the power to order production of citizens' bank records has shifted from Judge to Police under this law. Earlier Police → Judge → Bank Now Police → SP/above → Bank Without prior judicial approval. 🐒 🧵 1/7

Advice I now give to my students: don't write using AI at all, at any stage. It's nearly unavoidable in searches, and that is OK. But in writing: draw a line. Be explicit: 'this is AI-free writing.' In some fields it will probably be good, soon, to have a reputation of this kind.

Prabhat Patnaik on Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam: “Even the British colonial government did not incarcerate prisoners without trial for such a long time. The infamous Rowlatt Act of 1919 provided for incarceration without trial for a maximum period of two years.”

A pernicious myth of Indian public discourse is that students blindly regurgitate what their teachers tell them. As if they don’t think for themselves, as if a myriad other sources don’t shape their worldview, as if they don’t often passionately disagree. Bury the myth.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but morally treasonable to the American public." -FDR What goes for Presidents, goes for Prime Ministers too.

“In the face of uncomfortable truths, the State and society critique the form, carefully avoiding the substance. Instead of providing answers, they try to shift the attention from accountability to etiquette.”
