Plus, not everyone is qualified to help someone improve. Just coz you have an opinion doesn't make you a reliable critic. Saying "i've read a lot of fanfic" isn't a qualification either. We've eaten food our whole lives, but that doesn't make us all reliable food critics.

tbh you are going to do more to help a newer writer improve by leaving them alone and letting them practice than you are by being an asshole. bc yeah practice alone isn’t ideal but it’s better than someone being discouraged by bullying or misled by bad advice

Why is it so difficult to stop reading and MOVE ON? Why do people think it's their responsibility to "help them improve"? I refuse to believe chancing upon bad fic impacts life so terribly that something has to be done about it. Let bad fic exist. It's fine oh my god
And literally in the time I've been reading fic (over a quarter of a century) I've never seen a fic that is actually illegible.
Have people forgotten "My Immortal"? That's the worst fic I've ever read and it was still readable, just...really annoying in large doses.

most fanfics with frequent grammatical errors that one might describe as “can barely string a sentence together” are written by young teenagers/preteens and/or beginner english speakers so i actually don’t think they should be bullied for the lack of polish in their fics

Fanfic writers don't actually need to improve.
That's just a fact. Some might want to. But nobody has to actually improve.
Fanfiction isn't something you actually need to be better at. And nobody owes you good writing for free.
