You're forgetting something important. The reader knows more than the characters. Lily didn't agree to date until after Snape had already ruined any chances with Lily by calling her a mudblood and made it clear that his sympathies lay with the death eaters. Lily didn't choose between 11-year old Severus who said that she was too cute to be taken by the dementors; and 11-year old James, Gryffindor hopeful. Lily didn't choose between James and the Severus who eventually died to bring down Voldemort and who spent his entire life preparing for this and protecting Lily's son. She chose between 17-year old James, Head boy, and handsome captain of the Quidditch team; and 17-year old Severus, racist, death eater. But since all Potterheads are so clearly invested in the characters of the books, let me change the setting a little. Germany, 1930:ish Lily is a Jewish German, James is a rich German, Severus is a poor German (and Lupin is obviously homosexual; hated by most people on all sides). Severus has been brought up to hate all Jews, but doesn't really see Lily as a Jew. James bullies Severus because he's poor. He does make friends with Lupin though, and remains so even after he finds out about Lupin's sexual orientation. James is so full of himself that he expects Lily to fall for him just because he's so rich and handsome. Meanwhile, Severus, just like the rest of us "best friends without benefits" keeps hoping that by just being there long enough the girl will eventually fall. At one point James humiliates him in front of Lily, who further humiliates him by the simple act of trying to help him, he calls Lily a filthy Jew, something that causes Lily to stop hanging out with him. A bit short on friends, Severus joins and finds meaning in Hitlerjugend. While Severus remains anti-semitic and a member of the Hitlerjugend, James eventually becomes slightly less full of himself, and Lily agrees to marry him. They have a child. The year is 1945. The final solution is in full effect. All Jews are to be "terminated". Severus, now a spy for the SS, overhears a conversation mentioning the location of a Jew in hiding, so he tips off the SS. But when he realises that the Jew in question is Lily and that she, just like every other Jew, is about to be hauled off to the ovens-together with her blood traitor husband and their half-blood son-he realises his mistake. At first Severus tries to convince the Nazis to spare his beloved Jew (pretending that he just lusts after her), but fails. Having cold feet he now contacts the resistance to help extract Lily. Clearly disgusted by his half-arsed apology they demand that help save the entire family, not just Lily. He agrees. He, and the resistance, is too late though. Another traitor, a close "friend" of the Potters, have ratted them out. Only the child survives. At that moment Severus swears off his NSDAP ties for good. While he can never look at the surviving child or think of James without being reminded of his own dark past, he never the less swears to protect the child, and if the Nazis ever were to rear their ugly faces again, he'd infiltrate them and help bring them down permanently. The war is soon over and the world starts recovering. Unlike our own timeline, however, Hitler didn't die (he was protected by a computerised, 5 layer kevlar vest), and some 16 years after the first events we once more come full circle, with Hitler once more in full power (now with a 6th layer added), the SS hauling people off to death camps or killing them on the spot. This time three things are different though. Harry is grown and knows about the computerised kevlar vest, and has, together with his best friends, been hunting down backdoors to hack and disable layer after layer. Severus Snape is a spy for the resistance. Hitler's luger can only be used by Harry-if Hitler tries to use it to kill Harry, it will backfire.

Teach Black children their history? ABSOLUTELY! But teach them ALL of it, not some carefully curated historical narrative designed to leave them perpetually angry, resentful, and convinced that their future is imprisoned by their ancestors’ past. You want to teach them about slavery? EXCELLENT! Then let’s teach them about the African kingdoms and merchants who captured, enslaved, and sold other Africans. Let’s discuss the Kingdom of Dahomey, the Asante Empire, and the role African intermediaries played in the transatlantic slave trade. Let’s teach them about the Arab slave trades, which operated across centuries, and the indigenous systems of servitude that existed in Africa before Europeans arrived. And absolutely teach them about European colonialism, the Atlantic slave trade, the barbarity of plantation slavery, and the laws that systematically deprived Black Americans of their liberty. But don’t you dare selectively edit history to manufacture an eternal racial grievance. Let’s teach Black children about Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and the extraordinary accomplishments of Black Americans who refused to let oppression define the boundaries of their existence. Let’s teach them that African history did not begin with slavery and that Black American history did not end with emancipation. Let’s teach them about African civilizations, scientific achievements, entrepreneurship, intellectual independence, family formation, and the extraordinary resilience of our ancestors. And while we’re examining historical culpability, let’s examine the American political institutions that defended slavery, enacted Jim Crow laws, and resisted civil rights. Let’s name the politicians, examine their party affiliations, and acknowledge how those parties and their coalitions changed over time. No selective amnesia for anybody. Here’s where I fundamentally disagree with you. You appear more interested in teaching Black children whom to resent than teaching them what they can accomplish. My ancestors endured extraordinary suffering. Their suffering deserves historical accuracy, reverence, and remembrance. It does not require me to surrender my intellectual independence or teach my children that their destiny is controlled by people who lived centuries before them. History should produce knowledge, not inherited animosity. Teach the entire historical record, including the uncomfortable chapters that contradict your preferred narrative. Because a child who knows only the atrocities committed against his ancestors knows only a fraction of his ancestry. And that is an egregious intellectual disservice. I will teach my children what happened to their ancestors. But I will also teach them who their ancestors WERE before captivity, what they accomplished afterward, and what they themselves are capable of becoming. My God did not create my children to spend their lives shackled to the grievances of yesterday. Teach history. Don’t manufacture helplessness. #AStoneGroove #SilentMajoritySpeaks
Normalize teaching your children about the twin evils of slavery and colonization. Teach them who enslaved our ancestors, who colonized our lands, who stole our resources, and how their wealth was built on our suffering. Black children must know their history — a history written in sweat, tears and blood. Never let them forget it.

In 1941, a Spaniard walked into the British embassy in Madrid and offered to spy on the Nazis. The British turned him down. So he went to the Germans instead, pretended to be a loyal fascist, and got hired as a German spy. His plan was to lie to them for the rest of the war. It worked better than anyone could have imagined. His name was Juan Pujol García. Before the war he had tried his hand at running a chicken farm and a movie theater. He had no spy training. What he had was a deep hatred of both fascism and communism after the Spanish Civil War, and an incredible imagination. The Germans gave him a codename, invisible ink, money, and orders to go to Britain and recruit spies. He didn't go to Britain. He went to Lisbon, Portugal, and made everything up. Using a tourist guidebook, maps, magazines, newsreels, and a British railway timetable from the library, he wrote long, detailed reports about life in England. Military movements. Morale. Ports. He'd never been there. He made mistakes. He didn't understand British money. He once reported that dockworkers in Glasgow would do anything for a liter of wine. The Germans loved him anyway. Then British codebreakers reading German messages noticed something strange. The Germans were hunting for a convoy that didn't exist, based on a report from some agent in Britain they'd never heard of. The British went looking for this mystery spy. They found Pujol. In 1942 they finally took him on and brought him to London. Now he had real help. MI5 gave him the codename Garbo, after the actress, because they thought he was the greatest actor in the world. Together with his British handler, Pujol built a fake spy network for the Germans. It eventually had 27 imaginary agents. Each had a name, a personality, a job, and a backstory. A Welsh nationalist. A Venezuelan student. A Greek sailor. Some of them recruited their own imaginary sub-agents. When they needed to explain why one agent had gone quiet, they killed him off. They even put a fake obituary in a Liverpool newspaper. The Germans reportedly paid a pension to his widow. Who also didn't exist. Then came D-Day. Hours before the landings, the British let Pujol send a message warning the Germans that the invasion was coming in Normandy. It was timed so it would arrive too late to matter, but it made him look brilliant. Three days later he sent the most important message of his career. Normandy was a trick, he said. The real invasion was still coming, at Calais, led by a huge army under General Patton. That army was fake too. But the Germans believed him. German forces that could have been rushed to Normandy were held back near Calais for weeks, waiting for an attack that never came. The Germans were so grateful they awarded him the Iron Cross. A few months later, King George VI made him a Member of the Order of the British Empire. He's one of the only people known to have been decorated by both sides of the war. After the war, afraid of revenge from surviving Nazis, he faked his own death from malaria in Africa and disappeared to Venezuela, where he lived quietly running a shop. For decades the world thought he was dead. In 1984, a British writer tracked him down. Pujol came back to Normandy for the 40th anniversary of D-Day and met veterans who had landed on the beaches. Some of them thanked him.

#shoa
