I painted five of these for a merchant in Toulouse who wanted a gallery of Muses in his house. He lost his fortune. In 1824 a Swiss general bought them and added a wing to his castle at Wallenried, simply to have room for them. They hung there for a hundred and eighty years. The gallery is gone, the merchant is gone, and so am I. But the five have never been apart.
