"defensive responses like fleeing or freezing can co-occur with feelings of fear, not because the neural processes underlying these two kinds of events are intimately entwined in the amygdala, but instead because the events have the same starting point." Completely agree!
"Thoughtful Feelings" is a new My Word article in Current Biology. It's an overview of my ideas about what emotions are. Thank you @GeoffreyNorth1 for publishing these "thought pieces." authors.elsevier.com/a/1bCM7…

Did you ever wonder what happens to memory in Alzheimer's disease? We found that the memory trace is still there, but impaired by interference with other neuronal ensembles. Like a noisy radio channel. Check it out: nature.com/articles/s41593-0… @DZNE_en @DZNE_de

Great talk by @hakwanlau at Consciousness Club @WCHN_UCL dealing with which creatures are conscious and ending with suggested clinical treatments for fear and phobia. Thanks to @smfleming for organizing – at Islington, London

Congrats @TinaVoelcker! This is one of those really pretty results I think a lot of folks suspected was true but never confirmed. Until now.

Congratulations Moita Lab @Neuro_CF @ChampalimaudF !
Sshh... That sudden sound of silence... When others stop and silence ensues, animals respond as if threatened. Study from @Neuro_CF identifies the brain areas involved in listening to dangerous silence (thalamus, auditory cortex, amygdala) #PLOSBiology plos.io/3fLDYNu

Brought to you from Buzsaki Lab Bay F - a review! Wherein @dlevenstein, @kmcclain340, @davidwtingley, @brainrhythms, and I chew on what we really mean when we say (re)activation. Thank you to @morganbarense @hugospiers for organizing such a cool issue. authors.elsevier.com/c/1aqv7…

When I first started studying rodents in 1980s there was strong anti-rodent sentiment because it was necessary to over-value primate research to project the investment. Now the rodent work is falsely touted as the answer. Both have limits and advantages. Best to know both.
it has suddenly dawn on me why certain authors have been writing off the role of the PFC in any kind of perception / sensation / motor intention etc, despite the mountain evidence.
