As efforts to bring Russia back into international sport gather momentum, where should sports clubs draw the line? Djurgårdens IF has now taken a clear position. For those unfamiliar with Djurgårdens IF (DIF): Founded in Stockholm in 1891, Djurgårdens IF is one of Sweden's most historic and successful multi-sport clubs. With more than 487 national championships across 25 various sports, it is the country's most successful sports association. Djurgården has also produced a remarkable number of NHL players and is a major institution in Swedish sport. We have now held a board meeting at Djurgårdens IF. Regarding the attempts to reintegrate Russia into the international sports movement, the unanimously adopted position of the Djurgården Alliance Board is to urge all member clubs within Djurgårdens IF to: 1. Work through their respective national governing bodies to maintain the exclusion of all Russian sporting representation from international competitions and exchanges. 2. Refrain from elite-level recruitment of athletes who, after 24 February 2022, have voluntarily signed or extended contracts with Russian clubs. 3. Refrain from entering into new or extending existing sponsorship agreements with companies conducting commercial operations in Russia. These recommendations will remain in effect for as long as Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine continues. We will publish a more comprehensive statement tomorrow morning, once we have had the opportunity to inform all 24 member clubs. We will also publish an extract from the official board minutes, allowing everyone to see the precise scope of the decision, the reasoning behind it, and what it means in practical terms for the clubs within Djurgårdens IF.
