In 1930, a church delegation from abroad arrived in the Jordanian city of Karak—specifically the town of Adir—to purchase land to build a church. When they found an ideal site, and intended to buy it, they discovered it belonged to the Al-Ma’ayta Muslims. Instead of selling it, the Al-Ma’ayta member, led by their sheikh, welcomed the idea and decided to donate the land to their Christian neighbors. The sheikh added a lighthearted yet deeply meaningful condition: "The priest must be one of our own—a Jordanian!" Since that day, a popular saying has lived on in Jordan: "We want a priest from the Muslims, and a sheikh from the Christians." This is the spirit of Karak, the city where terrorists targeted one of its churches. The attack was not meant to target Christians alone, but rather the deep-rooted coexistence between Christians and Muslims. Terrorism doesn't have a religion. If a person is an extremist or a terrorist, their Islam, their Christianity, or their Judaism is going to be extremism or terrorism. People are extremist, terrorist, or peaceful, not religions; it depends on what a person in that religion brings to it. Terrorism is not a religion; it is an act.
