@LesterSpence we need that update, brotherman. I’m sure you have plenty of things to say with everything going on as of late.

Anyone who has a chance to go to @astradisastra and @NaomiAKlein’s book tour for End Times Fascism needs to go. As someone who’s been catching Naomi’s book tours for almost two decades now, the way they can weave our various crises into a cohesive throughline is just unmatched

This wasn't a bug. This was a feature.
The problem with that original piece in @TheAtlantic was that it was written as a personal essay but in a way that was supposedly representative of how things were for all Black professors at @BatesCollege and beyond. 1/

Don't miss this open-access volume. The TOC is stacked: link.springer.com/content/pd… Here's my contribution, which goes out to all of the clowns on here associating the term racial capitalism with racial liberalism or even neoliberalism:

What would you predict would happen, empirically speaking, if a white supremacist bought twitter?
This is spinning a little bit out of control. What is this movement on Twitter to denounce the existence of entire academic traditions, as though they should have never existed?

We don't need silence. When they tell you what they believe (and implicitly, what standards they use for their claims), take them literally and seriously.
My view on the whole sorry affair

No. We want them to speak. The last thing we need right now is silence, because we need to know who they are.
Shut up. Just shut the hell up. Silence is an option during a moment like this.

yeah....but it's worth noting that there are only one or two sectors (charitably) where something like this exists. and as we're witnessing in higher ed, even moving from 3-4% generates civilization threatening anxiety.

For folks interested in both an empirically accurate and politically helpful examination of the US university in this moment: bu.edu/bulawreview/2026/07/3…

For everyone else, there's a piece in The Atlantic.

Tyler's piece is wrong. But the timing is only bad from the perspective of folks who want to reverse what's happening.
Harvard just laid off more than 30% of its Faculty of Arts and Science administrators The hardest hit job titles were: coordinator, faculty assistant, financial associate thecrimson.com/article/2026/…

No. Is this illustrative or representative? Is the causal claim he's been making true? We've got anecdotes masking as evidence. Correlation masking as causation. His record suggests why the piece reads as it does. Treat him as a whistleblower if that makes you feel better.
Nothing validates @Tyler_A_Harper recent essay as much as some of the academic reactions to it. It’s like he’s revealed a dirty family secret over dinner and the grandkids are going “not now grandad, not now”.

No one can dispute the details of Harper's experience...that's the point. What we can't dispute is the record. And a quick Google scholar search tells me a great deal here.
I cannot dispute the details of Harper’s experiences. But I hope people understand that this isn’t representative (Bates and the SLACs are their own thing). I also have serious misgivings about the motives behind writing something like this at a time like this.

The Atlantic article makes me think of the Vanderbilt/Wash U report, commissioned by two empirical political scientists....and containing this paragraph:

The university is riddled with challenges. You'd think if the problem was primarily one of wokeness two political scientists (including one the of best methodologists of his cohort) would be able to generate empirical data to prove what Austin Harper suggests is an epidemic.
