Exasperated

As the days draw closer to Remembrance Day, we pause not only to mark a date on the calendar, but to sit with the full weight of what that day asks of us. We remember the men and women who left home with a promise—to stand between their communities and whatever danger threatened them—and who never returned. Their names live on in memorials, in family stories, and in the quiet spaces where a chair still feels empty. We also remember those who did come home, carrying experiences most of us will never fully understand. The nights that don’t end when the lights go out. The skills learned under pressure that the civilian world doesn’t always know how to use. The pride that sits alongside the cost. Their service didn’t stop when the uniform came off; for many, the hardest work began afterward. To every veteran: thank you. Thank you for the years you gave, the risks you took, the friends you lost, and the version of yourself you set aside so others could live ordinary, free lives. Your courage is not measured only in battles fought, but in the daily choice to keep going—to rebuild, to care for your families, to show up for one another, and to carry the memory of those who cannot. We can honor that service best by more than words. We can listen without rushing to fix. We can make sure the systems meant to support you actually do. We can teach the next generation why the poppies matter and why “Lest We Forget” is not a slogan but a responsibility. And we can simply say, clearly and often, that you are not forgotten. To those who serve now, to those who have served, and to the families who stand beside them: you are seen, you are valued, and you are not alone.
