A guy who used to sleep in his car in a Chicago alley, strung out on heroin, made his first movie a few blocks from that same alley. The movie was The Dark Knight, and he played the Joker's henchman, standing a few feet from Heath Ledger. He only got the part because Christopher Nolan rejected him first. Dastmalchian was doing small theater gigs around Chicago and paying rent as a telemarketer and a movie theater usher when the casting call went out. He read for one of the guys in clown masks who rob the bank in the opening scene. He was pretty sure he'd booked it. A week later he found out they'd already shot it without him. A few months after that, his phone rang with a completely different role. Thomas Schiff, the paranoid schizophrenic who hides in the police honor guard at the commissioner's funeral with the Joker. That's who you're looking at in the photo. It was the first movie set he'd ever walked onto, and on his last day of the shoot he walked past the alley where he used to sleep, five years after he got clean. The movie made a billion dollars and he still couldn't find an agent. He moved to LA with The Dark Knight on his résumé, and the small agencies and management companies he went to turned him down anyway. So he wrote about the car. Animals is about two heroin addicts living in a beat-up car by the Lincoln Park Zoo, and he cast himself as the guy he used to be. It won a special jury award at SXSW in 2014 for courage in storytelling, and his son was born about a month later. Denis Villeneuve kept hiring him, for Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049 and Dune, and one of the first things Denis asked him was what working with Nolan was like. Fifteen years after The Dark Knight, Nolan brought him back for Oppenheimer and wanted to know what working with Denis was like. Nine days ago he opened as M. Bison in Street Fighter, the main villain of a big Paramount release, playing the part Raul Julia made famous. If Nolan had said yes the first time, he'd have made his movie debut as a dead guy in a clown mask.
David Dastmalchian once revealed he had never acted in a film before Christopher Nolan put him on set with Heath Ledger for 'THE DARK KNIGHT' (2008). It was his first film role, and suddenly he was surrounded by Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, and Gary Oldman—some of the most accomplished actors in the industry. You might imagine a first-time actor feeling intimidated, wondering whether he belonged there or desperately trying not to make a mistake. But Dastmalchian discovered something important about Nolan. Despite being one of the least experienced actors on set, Nolan made him feel “valued, validated” and treated his voice as an actor as something they could explore together. Dastmalchian also pushed back against the urban legends surrounding Ledger's Joker performance. “Contrary to the urban legends that surrounded Heath's performance as the Joker, when he was on set he wasn't twisting himself into knots with some kind of maniacal method-acting bologna.” Intimidation can make you focus on yourself instead of the scene. Am I good enough? What does the director think? What does the other actor think? Suddenly, you're watching yourself perform instead of actually living the moment. The bigger the opportunity feels, the more you need to focus on what's happening right in front of you. Years later, Nolan cast Dastmalchian again in 'OPPENHEIMER'. By then, he'd worked with filmmakers like Denis Villeneuve and James Gunn. But the experience of making 'THE DARK KNIGHT' meant even more because Dastmalchian had previously struggled with homelessness and heroin addiction. Filming took place just two blocks from an alley where he had once slept in his car. The film “didn't just revive his career, \[it\] gave him back his future.” The biggest opportunities don't require a different kind of acting. They require you to trust the work you've already done.

Gracias, Agus. Trabajazo.
Replying to @oscarbalmen @hbomax

When I was younger, I had what I call "New writer energy." I could write for eight or nine hours a day; go to 5 am. Whatever. I loved it. I loved the focus, I loved how present I could be in the moment. Yes, a lot of energy went to learning to write, but it continued into my early professional years as well. Now? No way. I can't do it. I'm older. So many distractions. Life. Responsibilities. The attention economy. I am lucky if I get 3 or 4 focused hours a day now. Just protecting my focused time is a job in itself. I have noticed that generic writing goals like ”Write" or "Write five pages” are far more likely to lead to procrastination for me. If I don't know how to start the moment I sit down, I am far more likely to get distracted and remain that way for the whole session. If you struggle with this too, I found that getting specific the night before helps my screenwriting quite a bit. Like: - Write the scene where he quits. - Write the scene Marcus shows up. - Outline Act 1. - Rewrite the scene with his son so he is less harsh. Sitting down for that session and knowing what I want to achieve before I even start gets me working much faster and makes the most of that rare deep-focus time.

What once was the peak, is now just the beginning. Paramount and Warner Bros. shaped over a century of culture. By combining them, we aren't rewriting history — we're equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine. Together, we are Skydance: a creative-first home for bold, quality storytelling.

Really excited about this video! I’ve had the idea of doing a movie press junket but with college students for a long time, so a couple weeks ago I went to @VillanovaU and a handful of students asked me whatever they wanted. It was so much fun and we really connected on a real level. The first episode is on my YouTube channel now, go watch! youtube.com/watch?v=WUKljfpS…

I'm thrilled to announce that with the upcoming Spider-Man '94 Annual #1, I will be returning to the world of Spider-Man. After 30 years, I'm finally getting to resolve the ending of my iconic animated series and tell the story of Peter finding Mary Jane. I want to thank everyone involved at Marvel for making this possible, especially my editor, Danny Khazem. I was given free rein to tell the story that I've always wanted to tell, and it has been a real blast!

Brad Bird says he’s happy with the final CG animation of ‘RAY GUNN’, but also thinks Hollywood has turned against 2D animation. “Studios think audiences won’t accept that... I don’t agree that hand-drawn animation isn’t commercial.” Find out more... discussingfilm.net/2026/09/2…
