Use of high-flow may increase length of stay (and highly likely not to decrease it) All decisions have context. Might make you feel better in ED that you've 'done something' but actually you are making the patient experience worse... jamanetwork.com/journals/jam… HT @apsmunro

Wondering why our healthcare system is so overwhelmed? It's multi-factorial, but there are >1000 NZers in hospital with COVID, influenza or other respiratory illnesses every day. Please wear a mask 😷 get your whānau vaccinated 💉 & stay home if you're sick 🏡
There are 10,290 new active community cases of COVID-19 to report today. There are 522 cases in hospital. Of these, 10 are in an intensive care or high dependency unit.

A reminder of those rewrites, drafts resubmits and sheer bloody mindedness to get to the end! #academia #publication #phd
When someone has paper published or wins an award or gets promoted you only see the final success. You don't see the earlier rejections, revisions and setbacks. You might assume they found it easy but that is rarely so. @sylviaduckworth #PhDchat #ECRchat #postdoc #gradschool

So, Minister Little is willing to pay for any medical doctor who wishes to train as a GP. It would be logical then (perhaps more so) to make a similar commitment to any nurse wishing to be educated to work as a Nurse Practitioner in primary health care.

I’ve had a long day and this is my best thought, everyone. Let’s not, whatever happens from here, become numb to Covid-19 deaths

Emergency nursing numbers seriously impacted time to realise no quick fix. Covid highlighted existing problems but overseas staff are not available and not the answer. Our system is broken engage with nurses to find solutions #CENNZ #Emergency #nurse

Because a large proportion of the population are <12 years and unable to be vaccinated, the pandemic is shifting onto children, and they now comprise a larger proportion of covid cases. Cases mean isolation, disruption & illness for these families. It’s good to be cautious.

Not diminishing the important scarce resources associated with ICU... but also worth considering: 100% of hospitalised COVID-19 patients need (initial) care in the Emergency Department.
Auckland’s covid patient hospital occupancy mirrors Melbourne’s roughly for 19 august. If we track the same way, in 6 weeks it’ll be grim. Capacity for treating conventional illness will be very low. #getvaccinated

A few weeks ago I started drawing attention to Singapore's Covid-19 response as one NZ can learn from. S'pore has pop 5.7 million, 73 Covid-19 deaths, 83K cases. After reopening commenced on 19 Aug, cases rose exponentially. What should we be learning? /1 graphics.reuters.com/world-c…
