Here's what you need to know about the Migration Policy Framework for Africa (MPFA). #MoveAfrica
For over two decades, the MPFA has guided how African countries manage migration and mobility. The revised framework (2018–2030) provides a roadmap to help Member States develop coordinated, rights-based, and development-oriented migration policies through eight key pillars:
1. Migration Governance – Promoting safe, orderly, and dignified migration while protecting the rights of migrants.
2. Labour Migration & Education – Advancing fair labour mobility, skills recognition, and education systems that respond to labour market needs.
3. Diaspora Engagement – Harnessing the expertise, investment, and knowledge of the African diaspora to support the continent's development.
4. Border Governance – Strengthening border management and cross-border cooperation to facilitate mobility, security, and regional integration.
5. Irregular Migration – Expanding safe and regular migration pathways while combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking.
6. Forced Displacement – Enhancing protection and durable solutions for refugees, asylum seekers, returnees, and internally displaced persons.
7. Internal Migration – Supporting policies that respond to rural-urban migration, urbanisation, and internal mobility.
8. Migration & Trade – Leveraging the AfCFTA and the AU Free Movement of Persons Protocol to advance trade, labour mobility, and continental integration.
