In successfully defending a Senate seat in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed overcame Haley Stevens (twice) and Mike Rogers, but also a nasty strain of Islamophobia that emerged not-so-quietly during this campaign. Stevens’s sudden weird late endorsement of Rogers over the weekend, accompanied by a mini-media blitz, clearly didn’t make a difference. El-Sayed will now become the first-ever Muslim to serve in the U.S. Senate, which is just one of the many historic feats in these midterms.
