I have an essay in the new issue of @thebafflermag about the mundane, incredible fact that London, alongside many other cities, has for the last 50ish years been filling up with Himalayan parakeets - and on the contested realm of invasion biology itself. thebaffler.com/salvos/the-po…

Some personal news ❤️
In news that sits spiritually alongside my incessant grumbling about AI, I became a father recently. Mum & baby Asa both now doing great. This has affected the quality & frequency of my shitposts, but I do love him with my whole entire heart, so. Swings and roundabouts.

Ah yes, the two genders, economics and sociology
Why do we need sociology? Because we will understand the society we live in less well if we leave all social investigation to economists. This is not a dig at economics, it is simply an observation about the framing of intellectual tasks. There are some tasks, like many types of

I recently selected this exact hotel as a mid-range option for a work trip to Manchester.
Imagine living in the small and resentful world that has this idea and pursues this news story. Get a life Mail on Sunday! Can you imagine a US paper running a story like this… of a US state dept senior person taking a train from Penn to DC? They truly hate the north…

Burnham has talked a good game on rough-sleeping but it remains a notoriously intractable policy problem - this piece in @RenewalJournal by a front-line homelessness charity worker cuts through some of the well-intentioned rhetoric on the issue and lays out the challenge ahead.

I have written this short article with Professor @martin_oneill for @RenewalJournal. For the new Burnham government to seriously challenge one of the most extractive economic systems in the western world, after decades of damaging neoliberal economics, we need radical change, not skirting round the edges. A central component of this must be a more democratic economy including a new Community Wealth Building Act. Full article ⬇️: renewal.org.uk/blog/if-burnh…

I've written a short piece for @RenewalJournal with @MatthewBrownLab, Leader of Preston City Council and main architect of the Preston Model of Community Wealth Building, on what Andy Burnham needs to do if he's serious about changing the British economy. Link in next post. 1/2

Not much to disagree with in this - but the obvious and unsaid thing is that the Starmer government has quite continually delivered for non university educated working class people, and has at almost every turn failed to communicate this effectively and with authenticity.
Replying to @ppi
@ppi has launched a new Substack - Radically Pragmatic- and here’s my reflections on what went wrong for Keir Starmer’s government and lessons for the global center-left. Center-left parties have to remain as focussed in power on the everyday concerns of voters as in opposition:
