Vilnius, Lithuania.
The third and last stop on my mission to the Baltics this week.
This morning, I met with the 🇱🇹 Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Egidijus Meilūnas to discuss a range of topics, including strengthened international cooperation to better support the health and wellbeing of the people of war-battered Ukraine, an issue high on both of our agendas.
I was grateful also to hear of the Vice Minister’s commitment to addressing antimicrobial resistance #AMR, one of the most urgent global public health threats we face today.
I then met with Minister of Health Aurimas Pečkauskas, Vice Minister of Health Olegas Niakšu, and their team.
We again underscored our joint commitment to strengthen access to health care to Ukrainians, both inside the country and out.
I heard about Lithuania’s impressive work on improving digital health, reducing the prices of medicines, boosting primary health care and strengthening mental health care.
Lithuania has also taken significant steps to better prepare its health system for the next major health emergency in this age of permacrisis.
Of course, there are many challenges.
As in other @WHO_Europe Member States, the Lithuanian health workforce is stretched to capacity. There are not enough nurses. And the current overall budget for health is hard-pressed to meet the needs.
We truly look forward to working with Lithuania to tackle and help overcome these challenges.
