While hosting the Irish Section of the Nutrition Society Conference this week, I'm so conscious of babies and families in Gaza who are experiencing severe hunger & starvation. People in Gaza urgently need food aid; humanitarian organisations must be allowed to assist.
How Gaza's children face a lifetime of harm from food blockade. The forced starvation of Gaza's children will have profound, long-term & generational health consequences, write @Kennedy_ails @LizOSullivanPhD @WeAreTUDublin & Clare Patton @UniversityLeeds rte.ie/brainstorm/2025/0612/…

.@rodericogorman good to see duration & rate of pay of maternity leave in Ireland being discussed. Tho women are currently entitled to 26 weeks paid leave, the payment in the form of the a maternity benefit is only ~9 weeks full-rate equivalent.

.@bflgireland represented by @aoifelongeng at the Latching On morning hosted by Mrs Sabina Higgins. Highlighting that breastfeeding is a sustainability and climate justice issue. Also, the need to introduce the WHO Code into Irish legislation. (1/2)
Digital marketing of breast milk substitutes is so pervasive; @CNaM_ie need Codes to restrict marketing of commercial milk formulae. @ColmBurkeTD is applauded for establishing a steering group to establish a new BF policy. 🤞 the BF steering group engages with @CNaM_ie too! (2/2)
Mrs Sabina Higgins condemns the daily advertisements for follow-on formulae and suggests instead that TV ads focus on normalising breastfeeding. Says Ireland should adopt the WHO Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Subsitutes. @bflgireland. #NationalBreastfeedingWeek2024
Mrs Sabina Higgins highlights the need for more midwives to provide breastfeeding support in the early days. Mrs Higgins quoted @BainneBeatha and @WeAreTUDublin survey of >5,000 mothers as evidence of this need.
Delighted to see this from @ColmBurkeTD 👏👏👏 Funding to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding is so important for public health. Looking forward to seeing the finer details and to building on this into the future.

💶 Ireland's 2025 Budget being announced tomorrow, on the 1st day of national breastfeeding week 🤱. 🤞 for ring-fenced funding for BF support. Last week, @HSELive reported ⬆️ prevalence of BF @ 3 months (👏 @LauraMcHugh12). It'd be great to build on that momentum! @BainneBeatha
