Under the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act, Britain devoted 40% of its national budget to buying the freedom of enslaved people empire-wide.
The government took on so much debt for this effort that the loan wasn't fully repaid until 2014-MEANING living British taxpayers helped foot the bill for ending slavery.
The UK ENDED black slavery and we've ALREADY paid for it 🇬🇧

The youngest British soldier of WW1 was just 12 years old.
His name was Sidney Lewis, a boy from London who ran away from home in August 1915 without telling his parents.
His parents had absolutely no idea where their young son had disappeared to, until a soldier back from the front lines on leave mentioned seeing him in France.
Sidney easily tricked army recruiters who were more than happy to turn a blind eye to underage boys eager to fight.
By the time he was 13, he was operating heavy machine guns in the 106th Machine Gun Company right in the thick of the Battle of the Somme.
He survived six weeks of hell in the Battle of Delville Wood, enduring some of the most horrific casualties of the entire war.
Desperate to save her child, his mother tracked down his military unit and sent a frantic letter to the War Office demanding his release, attaching his birth certificate as absolute proof.
The army had no choice but to discharge him and send him home to his family.
It wasn't until 2013 that historians and the Imperial War Museum officially authenticated his record, confirming that a 12 year-old boy truly braved the worst of the Great War.
Lest we forget.

At this time of year, we come together to honour the courage and bravery of the Armed Forces and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
I want to give my thanks to those who have served and are still serving today. I know you and your families make huge sacrifices to keep our country safe.
My job is to make sure that sacrifice is honoured, both through the way we treat our Armed Forces and our veterans, but also through the country we build for you and for your loved ones.
We will give our Armed Forces the funding and equipment you need to keep this country safe, as well as the good housing, training, and support you deserve. This is a world where once again it’s become necessary to stand up for our values and stand alongside our allies.
Our memories of those who went before us give us strength to know we will never be cowed in the face of threats or aggression. And together we will build a country we are proud to serve, and a future that remembers and honours those who fought for our freedoms.
A Britain worth fighting for.
