The Waterman’s Arms
📍375 Lonsdale Rd, London SW13 9PY
🚇 Barnes Bridge
🍺 £7.50 Victoria Malaga
This pub sits overlooking the River Thames, in Barnes, Southwest London. The nearest station is Barnes Bridge.
The Waterman’s Arms dates back to 1850. It was converted into a restaurant in the 1980s, trading as Barnes Eatery and later Strada, before returning to pub use in 2019. Following a period of closure, it reopened under new management in 2023 and is the sister pub to The Shaston Arms in Soho.
This is a traditionally decorated, two room pub, with the main bar area on the ground floor. The servery is located to the left, with an open kitchen alongside it. Head upstairs and you’ll find a good sized dining room with a balcony offering views across the Thames.
The decor consists of wood floors, traditional tables and chairs, and upholstered pews around the perimeter. The walls are white, with a mix of exposed brick and wood panelling. One feature I love to see in a pub is a set of big, heavy curtains around the entrance, which is a rare sight these days.

The beer selection was solid, with a diverse mix of beers including one cask ale. I opted for a Victoria Malaga, my pint was superb, price point was a little punchy. This gastropub is known for its food, serving up a broad range of dishes, including potato fritters, beef ragu with pecorino, and spit-roast, tandoori-spiced chicken. On Sundays, there are hearty options such as porchetta, spit-roast piri-piri chicken and lamb shoulder.
I arrived at 5.30 pm on an overcast Wednesday afternoon in June. The pub had just opened, and I was shortly joined by a few regulars. The atmosphere was chilled and laid-back set to a superb soulful soundtrack. The service was on point, and the chap who served me was warm and welcoming.
Although this is a full on gastro pub, provisions are made for those who are here for a beer. I really enjoyed my pint, great to see Victoria Malaga on tap in London. The food receives rave reviews and will certainly appeal to the gastronomes among you.
All in all, I enjoyed my time here. It’s a cosy, intimate venue to spend time in.

The Hemingway
📍84 Victoria Park Rd, London E9 7JL
🚇 London Fields
🍺 £6.50 Moretti
The Hemingway is located on Victoria Park Road, in the backstreets of southern Hackney, East London. The nearest station is London Fields.
This Grade II listed Victorian pub dates back to at least 1863 and was originally known as the Royal Standard. It became Garbo’s Bar and Grill in 2009. The following year, it was renamed The Hemingway, taking its name from the American author Ernest Hemingway.
This is a characterful, traditionally decorated, one bar pub with high ceilings. The servery is located along the back wall of the main bar, with an open kitchen to the left. Just off the main bar, towards the rear, is another room and a snug that leads out to a beer garden, which also has a pool table. There are also plenty of benches at the front.
The decor consists of a boarded floor, white walls with dark wood panelling, oak tables and contemporary chairs. Around the walls are various artworks, mirrors and some skulls with horns. There is also a framed letter from a local resident asking the pub to keep the noise down, despite having bought a house next to a pub! 😀 The standout feature for me was the stunning servery.

The beer selection is entirely keg, with a choice of mainstream and independent brews. I opted for a Moretti, my pint hit the spot, price point was a little above average. The food menu offers gastro dishes and pub classics, fish and chips costs £18. Sunday roasts are also available.
We arrived just after 12 pm on a sunny Saturday lunchtime in August. The pub had only just opened, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. We were soon joined by a couple of locals, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxed. The service was excellent. The two team members on duty were brilliant: chatty and personable, they took the time to tell us about the pub and share some local history.
This pub is a bit of a stunner, with a charming Victorian feel. I loved the decor, and the hospitality was superb. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here, and I would 100% recommend a visit.

The Black Horse and Harrow
📍167 Rushey Grn, London SE6 4BD
🚇 Catford Bridge
🍺 £3.40 Amstel
The Black Horse and Harrow is located in Catford in Southeast London. The nearest station is Catford Bridge.
This pub has a long history, with an inn recorded on the site from at least the early 18th century. The present building was rebuilt in 1897. Over the years, the pub has traded under several names, most recently The Duke of Catford. Following a period of closure, it reopened in May 2026 under its historic name, The Black Horse and Harrow.
This is a grand, traditionally decorated one bar pub. The main bar area stretches the length of the pub, with a good sized servery. Just behind the main bar is an adjoining room with a pool table and two dartboards. Upstairs, there is a function room with a balcony, at the rear of the pub is a spacious beer garden.
The decor consists of a boarded floor, with tiles around the servery and a carpeted area on the far right. The walls and ceiling are painted in bold colours, and there is plenty of comfortable seating. There are some nice architectural details, including arched openings, columns and attractive woodwork.

The beer selection is all keg, with a line up of familiar favourites. I kept it simple and opted for an Amstel. My pint hit the spot, price point was excellent at under four quid. This is a wet-led pub, but bar snacks are available.
I arrived at 11am, bang on opening, on a mild Saturday morning in October. I was joined shortly afterwards by about half a dozen locals popping in for an early pint. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed, with the locals catching up on the latest gossip. The service was first class, and I was lucky enough to get a guided tour from the Guv’nor, who was personable and friendly.
This is a grand London pub that was great to spend time in. I loved the architecture and the scale of the place, and the prices are excellent. The hospitality was friendly, and I enjoyed the strong local community pub feel.
It’s always great to see a pub brought back to life. Make sure you pay it a visit if you’re in the area.

The cafe was a short walk to a pub I haven’t visited for a couple of years, Dunning’s Bar. A few locals in, Villa v City on the box.
