Alfred the Great died on this day, 1127 years ago.
Alfred set the foundations of a united England and drove the invaders out, while all odds were against him. In doing so, he secured the existence of the Anglo-Saxon race.
It is an honour for all Englishman today to call this man not just a hero, but an ancestor. Hail Alfred!

The Banner of the Five Wounds of Christ, carried by the English rebels during the Pilgrimage of Grace in 1536 🏴
Bearing the wounds of Christ upon a crimson field, it became the symbol of thousands of Englishmen who rose against Henry VIII's religious reforms and the dissolution of the monasteries. The English two-fingered salute is traditionally said to originate with our longbowmen during the Hundred Years' War 🏴
The French threatened to cut off the fingers of captured English archers, leaving them unable to draw their longbows again. Following English victories, particularly at Agincourt in 1415, our archers supposedly raised those same two fingers towards the French in open defiance, showing they still had them.
A gesture of English defiance and contempt for the enemy, passed down through generations and still recognised across Britain today 🏴

Arson at Eagle’s Nest.
🇩🇪 Fire engulfs the Kehlsteinhaus, the "Eagle's Nest," above Berchtesgaden in Bavaria. Police suspect arson, and a motorcyclist was detained near the scene. No injuries reported.
Bavarian police said the first responders arrived at 9:52 p.m. Friday and found a major fire at the building, which sits at 1,834 meters on the Obersalzberg. Initial findings indicate no one was inside, and no injuries are expected. Firefighting continued past midnight, hampered by the remote mountain access.
A Berchtesgaden police spokesperson told Bild that arson is suspected and that a motorcyclist who met officers on their way to the scene was arrested. Police have not officially stated the cause or said the man is the culprit.
The extent of the damage is not yet known. The Kehlsteinhaus, built for Nazi leaders and given to Hitler for his 50th birthday, is now a restaurant and tourist attraction, and it was not open to visitors at the time.
