The Binance hacker might have just pulled off one of the smartest moves I’ve seen in crypto. First, Tether froze $1.5 billion in USDT. Then Circle froze another $800 million in USDC. At that point, it looked like the hacker’s money was trapped. But apparently, he had already planned for that. Instead of holding the stolen USDT in a wallet, he allegedly deposited it into Aave and used it as collateral to borrow ETH. Then he walked away. That’s where the story gets crazy. Tether can freeze the USDT sitting in the wallet. But it can’t freeze the ETH he already borrowed. So now Aave is left holding frozen collateral, while the hacker is sitting on liquid ETH. And unless the protocol can recover it somehow, he may not even need to pay the loan back. Two companies froze billions of dollars in seconds. But someone who understood how to use DeFi may have found a way around both of them. Pretty insane when you think about it.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The described Aave deposit used only ~60M USDT as collateral to borrow 19,762 WETH before freezes hit the main wallet, not the bulk of funds; Aave states the overcollateralized position is subject to normal liquidation with no material protocol risk. governance.aave.com/t/binance-hot-… x.com/binance/status… drk.vc/news/binance-1…

Same ETH price as years ago. Nearly twice the on-chain activity. Less social conversation. Those are not the same market conditions. A price chart tells you where the market landed, not what changed underneath it.

96% of surveyed Swiss banks see blockchain offerings as critical within 3–5 years. Few have concrete plans. After hearing the discussion at CV Summit, I think the bottleneck is less belief than ownership: a “priority” with one person and no clear next test is still a waiting strategy. What changed that at your bank?

A market that trades 24/7 needs institutions that can manage risk 24/7. Otherwise, weekend access may be creating exposure faster than teams can monitor it. If you had to fix one thing first, would it be settlement or risk controls?

Crypto is not a jungle anymore. Institutional adoption keeps growing, and fewer crypto companies are ready to ride the wave. Capital matters more than ever, but how you use it decides who survives. That was my big lesson from an amazing week in Zürich 🇨🇭 Monday: @CryptoMondaysZH, "Bitcoin: Now or Never" Tue & Wed: #CVSummit Finale: a party on a boat on Lake Zurich 🛥️ On Wednesday I hosted the Deep Dive stage, where the audience challenges the speakers instead of just listening. It was some of the most honest conversation of the week. Thanks Bene, Fabiola, @CV_Labs and CVVC for counting on me. I was in every Wednesday panel and workshop, so more insights are coming soon. What's next: 🚀 Closing the year with startups at CVA. Founders and investors, my DMs are open. 🇨🇳 Shanghai, last week of October. If you're in the blockchain and Web3 scene there, let's meet. Reply "SHANGHAI" or "CVA" and I'll DM you 👇

My parents still convert euros into pesetas in their heads. Spain dropped the peseta in 2002. That's why Bitcoin wins as collateral long before it wins as cash. Tonight we kicked off CV Summit week at CryptoMondays Zurich with "Bitcoin: Now or Never". My favourite part was BTC as collateral. Banks lend against it and custodians run multi-billion vaults. That's real adoption, and it's happening right now. BTC as everyday cash is harder. People always translate prices back into the money they think in. If my parents still think in pesetas after 24 years, a whole society thinking in sats will take a while. Huge thanks to @Gio for the sharp moderation, and to our speakers @jm_seigneur , @heussepa and @PascalHuegli. Thanks also to @tenity_global and @bitget for supporting the night. The conversation continues at #CVSummit on Tuesday and Wednesday in Zurich. Come say hi 🇨🇭 So which comes first: Bitcoin as collateral, or Bitcoin as money? 👇

Paso a paso. Crypto a Crypto.

Well well... the only thing we are good at in Europe, regulation, can be a competitive advantage for us. Don't sleep on us.
BREAKING: The Crypto Clarity Act officially fails to pass in the Senate in a major setback for US crypto regulation.

To those responsible for the theft of bitcoin from the Liquid Network: Blockstream will not pay a ransom for the return of stolen funds. Taking assets without authorization and withholding their return is a crime, not responsible disclosure. It is not white-hat activity. It is theft. We have engaged in good faith in an effort to secure the return of stolen user funds and protect the broader Bitcoin community. That effort should not be mistaken for acceptance of the actions taken nor of the terms being demanded. We will not be a party to the precedent that open-source software developed for the good of the Bitcoin community should subject its developers to paying a ransom that far exceeds their economic participation. Bitcoin is hard money and can’t be minted without costs, Bitcoin doesn’t haircut users to pay a ransom. To the Bitcoin community: We are fighting for what we believe in, for the users whose funds were taken, and for the principles on which Bitcoin was built. The community has demonstrated incredible resolve with teams of people dedicating their time in support of each other to identify and patch vulnerabilities in each other's products and systems. We are all driven by the mission that Bitcoin is the single best asset, for every person, company, and institution on the planet to invest, use, and build on. The world is a different place with the advancements of AI, and the Bitcoin community has responded with force to combat that threat. Damage has been done, battles have been lost, but on the whole the Bitcoin community is gaining ground in the war with bad actors. We want to thank the community for those efforts, for your support in hardening the network, helping users recover funds, and for your support in our assertion that crime does not deserve rewards. To those holding the stolen bitcoin: There is still an opportunity to resolve this responsibly. The bitcoin can be returned and we can revert to the standard of white-hat principals. However, if the funds are not returned, we will pursue every lawful avenue available to us. We will work with law enforcement, exchanges, service providers, forensic specialists, and other relevant parties to trace and recover the assets and identify those responsible. More importantly, Bitcoin is transparent by design and the community is made up of the most sophisticated engineers, cryptographers, and white-hat hackers globally. Transactions do not disappear, and neither does the evidence they leave behind. We will not pay for the return of stolen property. We will not abandon our users. The Bitcoin community will not stop pursuing the funds. Return the bitcoin.

Surprised the $320M Liquid Network hack hasn't moved BTC's price yet. My guess: not about the payout. ~4,000 BTC held, on-chain negotiations for the return, no selling pressure. Anyone seeing it differently?

With only 2.6% miner signaling, BIP-110 has failed to earn broad miner support. At block 961,632, its nodes will reject non-signaling blocks. BIP-110 will then stall or fork into irrelevance while Bitcoin continues normally. Bitcoin is working as designed.

BIP 110 is the proposal dividing Bitcoin right now. @giacomozucco says the debate is confused: it mixes 3 different problems (governance, spam, illegal content) into one fork. His prediction: it fails by August 8. Bookmark this post. We'll check back. 📌

Giacomo Zucco calls nation states "criminal organizations." He's also El Salvador's honorary consul. His logic: you don't have to like the state to use it . El Salvador now legally shields Bitcoin companies that the US would prosecute. Pragmatism beats purity.
