10 remarks on AI and math that can be true all at once: 1. The recent progress is stunning and exciting. 2. The Quasi-Riemann Hypothesis is arguably Fields-medal level. 3. Mathematics is being transformed and there is no way back. 4. OpenAI doesn't give a fuck about the future of mathematics. 5. Half-baked unreadable preprints claiming major results can effectively stall mathematical progress. 6. Some mathematicians are responding with naive, overly defensive comments. 7. The social-media wankers framing this as "OpenAI tramples gatekeeping" have no experience of mathematical research. 8. The product of mathematics is clarity and understanding. Not theorems, by themselves. 9. Mathematics is a critical infrastructure of human cognition. The human need for understanding isn't obsolete and it can't be offloaded to machines. 10. We haven't "solved" mathematics and we won't get there before the Sun burns out.

#LYICMGat50 here we are, at 6.36 am on 26 August 2026, exactly 50 years - to the minute - since my birth. At #1 in the 50 recordings I’ve chosen to celebrate, we have Richard Hickox’s incredible Vaughan Williams 5. And how apt, given today is also the anniversary of RVW’s death.
#LYICMGat50 50 recordings, ahead of my 50th birthday. And it’s now the top 5. At #2 we have a set that was conceived as a single whole. The Bis Sibelius Edition contains multiple gems and I cannot imagine living without it.

#jokeoftheday Percussion problems. Wouldn’t you do it if you had to play 5,144 snare drum strokes playing Bolero? #music #percussion

"But it's peculiar, as soon as I am in the midst of nature and by myself, everything that is base and trivial vanishes without trace. On such days nothing scares me; and this helps me again and again." Gustav Mahler.

Massenet's Manon has never quite clicked for me. Looking for the right recording that might change that. Anyone have a rec?

Hi everyone, I’ve started listening to a G&S operetta to start the weekend. I’m currently listening to the 1950 D’Oyly Carte recording of The Gondoliers.

Just finished listening to this. Perhaps the first Beethoven cycle by a woman conductor? Anyway, by its own merits is very good, save perhaps for the 9th's Presto, which feels sluggish, espc. in the first part, and the choir struggled at some points...

An interesting discovery! 👍
My guru, Charles #Burney, had a good opinion of #Giacomelli's music and talent. Vivaldi himself held him in high regard, but that wasn't enough to erase his name from the list of famous composers. 🙄 It's therefore wonderful to find #Alpha’s recording of one of his twenty (1/3)

Listening to this collection of Berg chamber music. Not sure if I prefer Barenboim's performance of the sonata to Pollini's or even Gould's(!), but I'm enjoying it very much and looking forward to getting to know it better.
