Takeaways from focus group.
Was expecting Brexit backlash. But these 7 Makerfield residents, who all voted leave, didn’t rile at Burnham on EU
Immigration & welfare. Massive concerns. Lab backsliding on reform big risk for Burnham
Burnham: seems the honeymoon continues for now
Nearly 100 days into Andy Burnham's premiership, @BethRigby returns to Makerfield - the constituency that propelled him into No 10 - to ask whether the goodwill that carried him to victory is holding.

From Makerfield to No 10: Has Burnham changed?
Regardless of any tweaks made to the ILR proposals in the home office consultation (the broad thrust of which are popular). Recent cabinet interventions mean any weakening is now more easily portrayed to public as climb down on immigration control/capitulation to one wing of party who are less keen on control.

How is Andy Burnham doing as prime minister as he enters his 100th day in office?

🧵Ahead of the Budget, our research with @electrifygb finds bringing down energy bills is the public's top priority for the budget: picked by 58% of Britons, ahead of public services (33%) & tax cuts (32%). It is number one for Conservative, Labour, Lib Dem and Reform voters alike.
EXC: Lowering energy bills is Britons' top priority ahead of the Budget
But 77 per cent fear Labour will push them up even further.
@LukeTryl tells me worry about bills cuts across the income and political spectrum 👇

A risk to any Government interventions comes from the ‘squeezed middle’ Brits tend to prefer universal support over targeted. From focus groups, it’s clear there is a real risk that if support misses those who work and also aren’t elligible for benefits it will increase the growing frustration no one seems to have their back.
Measure which are seen to offer at least some help across the board, even if the bulk of targeting is at the poorest, are likely to command greater support. There is a real risk among those just ineligible for support that it feeds a narrative we hear a lot the super rich are looked after, benefit claimants are but they are not.

🟢 I've written this week's @NewStatesman Politics Column on the Greens' pledge to 'replace Labour' which, though fitting for the moment, was clearly unsustainable.
The problem with this promise might not have been its ambition, but the assumption that the Greens were ready to fulfil it. Events over the past three weeks - the fall out from the Zionism is Racism motion and the Holborn and St Pancras by-election - could all be seen as evidence of that.
And now, exclusive polling by @Moreincommon_ and shared with the NS shows Polanski's personal approval his personal net approval rating has hit a low of -35 per cent and one in four people now think the party has a serious anti-Semitism problem. Some polls have the Greens on 7 per cent, lower than before Polanski was elected.
So, where does the party go next? With Andy Burnham as prime minister, Polanski & the Greens' strategy can no longer be exclusively about criticising an unpopular Labour government - it will need to be about convincing voters they are a realistic alternative. There are figures within the party who are beginning to do this thinking. As several sources told me, for the first time Green factions are likely to form.

Obvs lots of drivers of this including cost of living. But working from home clearly a driver by removing the friction that gets you out of the house to begin with & instead having easy access to on demand entertainment. Result much smaller life bubbles.
