This looks pretty cool
1/ We discovered something totally unexpected about the neural structure of consciousness that overturns decades of thinking on its biological basis and brings us significantly closer to the recipe for generating conscious awareness.

Libor is a case study in how financial fraud allegations become a convenient political diversion for politicians and regulators eager to distract from their own blunders.

AI cracking unsolvable math problems while being kinda mid at writing is a much-needed W for humanities majors after a rough 21st century.
Super excited about this! (And I’m hiring…)

This looks sensible
Most countries can't afford to build frontier AI today but don't want to depend entirely on the US without a fallback. In a new @CarnegieEndow paper, @anton_d_leicht and I argue for a middle path: an AI "breakout posture." Move forward with US interdependence now, but lay the groundwork to build frontier systems later—onshoring compute, retaining pre-training talent, and setting up the legal and corporate vehicles for a sprint if they're ever cut off.

And assisted suicide supporters tell us we wouldn't need to worry about coercion of the elderly and vulnerable if they got their way?
The Daily Telegraph’s scoop about the distressing circumstances of the great explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes is remarkable.
If a famous, well-connected man can be so cut off from the outside world by his second wife in a succession of care homes, what must be happening to thousands, without powerful friends, in a similar situation?

It seems almost unreal that Britain has got to this stage. Truly awful
I’ve written about the grim trend of people asking @JewishNewsUK to remove their names from old articles because they no longer want to be publicly identifiable as Jewish.
This morning was the saddest yet. The children of a remarkable man, honoured by the late Queen, asked us to remove his obituary because it mentions them.
Britain has been enriched for generations by stalwarts of our community who were proud to put their names to what they built, created and contributed. Now their children are asking for those names to disappear.
The question is no longer whether British Jewish life is in retreat. It is how much of it will soon be left. This is not a country where my children can build their lives.

We are delighted to share our programs for this coming term with you. Our programming is not hybrid; we invite any and all members of our Oxford community to attend and visitors to Oxford are most welcome. We are wishing you all a wonderful Michaelmas term.
This - it’s as if people haven’t noticed all the other fields of human endeavour over the last few months where skeptics were gleefully pointing out LLM failures, only for a new model to suddenly outperform all humans
