How a single radio receiver saved a company and gave birth to a tech giant.
In the mid-1950s, a young British electronics company named Racal secured a massive order to build the highly-rated Collins 51-J radio receiver under license in the UK.
There was just one problem: the deal fell through.
Racal was left with a major contract, an ambitious deadline, but zero designs.
Enter Dr. Trevor Wadley. He approached Racal with a revolutionary concept that would change radio communication forever: the Wadley Loop.
In 1955, the Racal RA17 was born.
Before the RA17, high-frequency (HF) radios suffered terribly from frequency drift. If you were listening to Morse code or the newly emerging Single Sideband (SSB) transmissions, you had to constantly retune the radio as the components warmed up.
By utilizing the Wadley Loop, the RA17 effectively "locked" its local oscillator to a crystal reference, virtually eliminating drift. It was streets ahead of anything else on the market, offering unprecedented frequency stability and accuracy across 980 kc/s to 30 Mc/s.
A few quick stats on this legendary piece of engineering:
* Under the hood: A triple-conversion superheterodyne topology packed with over 20 vacuum tubes (valves).
* The "Gym Workout" factor: It weighed a staggering 67 lbs (30.5 kg).
* The Unique Interface: Tuning required two massive front-panel knobs—one to lock in the "Megacycles" (acting as a band-switch) and another to tune the "Kilocycles."
The RA17 became an instant masterpiece. Thousands were manufactured, becoming the backbone of communications for UK government institutions, the BBC, and military forces worldwide.
But its greatest legacy might be what happened next. The immense commercial success of the RA17 put Racal firmly on the map. Decades later, a successful spin-off venture from Racal’s mobile communications division grew into a little company you might recognize today: Vodafone.
Not bad for a radio that almost never happened!

Historians will look back on the 2026 El Niño as a major component of voter participation, and should include in their fancy turnout models.

Update: Ukraine is reporting that additional speed restrictions have been imposed on Starlink Internet terminals, and communications are lost at speeds of 60 to 70 kph. This essentially wipes out Ukraine’s drone operations through the operational depth. Earlier, restrictions were on StarShield only.

Quite, quite mad
Trump: “The United States, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn't.
And this is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision.
The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization. We will not forget, Norway.”
If this guy was a radio ham, you could definitely sell him a 3' tall antenna and tell him he'll get 160m DXCC with it
Every time an Argentine leader runs into trouble at home, they start up about the Falklands. Same playbook as Trump, always the same outcome. Humiliation.
Excellent report on WRTC shenanigans and sanctions. Some of the cheating described here was monumentally stupid wrtc2026.org/

Given SpaceX’s mission to colonize Mars, this is my best guess as to what needs to happen to get there. Working backwards from the first crewed landing on Mars, they will need ISRU and electrolysis to produce O₂ and H₂ from mined H₂0 ice, and the Sabatier process for CH₄ 1/8
What happened to the party of Goldwater, Reagan, and Ford? The people it sends out now are obnoxious and illiterate.
Compiling a list of "Solar Minimum nonsense".

Sad to see ham radio businesses closing, but we have a Labour government that is taxing people's eyeballs out. Nobody has any money. The current economic circumstances are a political choice.
Great missed DXpedition opportunity

Not sure if the typically myopic US media has quite clocked what an angry shitstorm President Trump has stirred up abroad with his callous, ungrateful, inaccurate gibe about America’s NATO allies staying away from the Afghan frontline.
He’s managed to unite pretty much everybody against him, even his hitherto supporters on the populist right. Even Keir Starmer!
