Kinnick had an overnight stay at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. It was for dental surgery, and by no means am I sharing this as a sympathy post or trying to compare his experience to what so many families go through. What I do want to share is THE VIEW. On every Saturday when Iowa Football plays at home, there are children and families inside that hospital facing unimaginable pain, uncertainty, and grief. Then, for just a small moment in time at the end of the 1st quarter, 70,000 Hawkeye fans and visiting fans turn their attention toward them and wave. For those families, it is something to look forward to. A moment that brings a smile. A moment where 70,000 strangers remind them they are not alone. For a child spending time in that hospital, the Wave can become a memory that brings joy during a time that may be filled with fear and uncertainty. That is why the Iowa Wave is the greatest tradition in college football. It’s not about showing up your opponent. It’s not about creating a loud memory for yourself. It’s about lifting up a child when they need it most.
