Limpopo NPA Spokesperson Faces Accused Of Unequal Media Treatment Over Court Coverage
Limpopo National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mashudu Malabi has come under scrutiny following accusations of unequal treatment of local media houses covering court proceedings in the province.
The concerns centre on an alleged demand for Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) certificates from MDNTV and other local media houses, while SABC, Daily Sun and Jacaranda FM were allegedly not subjected to the same requirement.
On Thursday, 8 October 2026, the affected media houses were reportedly given an ultimatum to produce the certificates or risk being prohibited from livestreaming court proceedings.
The demand allegedly followed concerns raised by Malabi that some MDNTV followers had directed abusive comments at Polokwane Magistrate Geoffrey Netshiozwi during proceedings involving suspended attorney Charlotte Tibana and her husband, Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) constable Peter Nonyane, also known as “Gagash”.
The media houses have also raised concerns about the distribution of information regarding court appearances. They allege that some outlets receive updates directly, sometimes late at night, while others are left out of the media WhatsApp group used to share information.
According to the affected media houses, this practice can disadvantage journalists, particularly those based outside Polokwane, by leaving them with limited time to arrange transport and attend court proceedings.
Today!, Friday, 9 October 2026, MDNTV, Mokgalakwena Local Newspaper and Mokgalakwena TV were instructed not to livestream or take photographs during proceedings at the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court in the fraud and corruption case involving the Mogalakwena Local Municipality manager, who was arrested by the Hawks.
The latest incident has added to concerns among local media practitioners about their access to court proceedings and whether the requirements imposed on different media organisations are being applied consistently.
The allegations raise broader questions about transparency, equal treatment of media houses and journalists’ ability to report on court proceedings in the public interest.
MDNTV has sought comment from NPA national spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago and South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) chairperson on the allegations. Their responses will be included in an update once received.

Maswanganyi's Manager Explodes Over Al-Khaldiya Exit Speculation
Patrick "Tito" Maswanganyi has not been sacked, he has not quit, and his manager says someone is trying to destroy his name.
Speculation that the midfielder had mutually terminated his contract with Al-Khaldiya SC over alleged ill-discipline trended on social media over the weekend.
Now Arnold Rankoko, his long-term confidant and manager, has shut it down in an angry interview with KickOff on Monday afternoon.
"There is someone who clearly has it in for this boy," Rankoko said. "There is nothing of the sort at all. "In fact, he is preparing for their game on Wednesday. You can even go to the club's Instagram page and see his pictures there. This is all fake news."
Rankoko believes the story is part of a deliberate attempt to smear the player.
"They are trying everything to paint him as a rotten apple," he added. "He is being targeted, and people are going all out to assassinate his character, painting him as a Bad Boy. But if you want to know Tito, ask anyone who has played with him, and they will tell you."
To explain Maswanganyi's quiet personality, Rankoko reached for some big names.
"He is more like (Michael) Olise. He does not talk, and at times you would think he's not there. It's just that people out there don't have the intelligence to read someone's character. Jose Riveiro managed to get the best out of him because he knew what type of person he is.
"During his playing days, Doctor Khumalo spoke less and did his talking on the field, and people thought he was arrogant. Same with Brian Baloyi. His character off the field was different to the one he displayed on the pitch."
Rankoko was furious that the story spread without anyone checking the facts.
"Even more disappointing is that no one had the decency to ask the team, the player, people close to the player. Somebody just decided to write something that's fake, and the whole of South Africa has seen it. They say he terminated his contract. Do they have a copy? The story has spread like wildfire, but there's no story."
The manager also revealed that stories like this were exactly why Maswanganyi left South Africa.
"That's why he had to move, because of things like this," he explained. "Every day (when he was in South Africa), there was a story like this, and he never got an opportunity to defend himself. That is why he will never come back to South Africa... you can quote me on that!"
On the pitch, Rankoko says the midfielder is doing his job.
"He has played all the games since he got there, and he has two assists in eight games. He just needs that one goal to open the floodgates, and that's what he is focusing on right now."
Al-Khaldiya, second in the Bahraini Premier League after six matches, face Al Wahda on Wednesday at 8.15 pm SA time. If Maswanganyi is in the squad, his manager's point will be made.

The club said the fraudulent accounts and groups have been "continually advertising false trials in exchange for payment."

Khoza Lost the Bet, Mofokeng Got the House: Inside the R200k Wager That Paid Off Big
Relebohile Mofokeng bet Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza that the Buccaneers would end their 14-year league drought. Khoza lost, and the winger now has a house.
The Royale Union Saint-Gilloise attacker reportedly made the bold wager with Khoza ahead of last season's league campaign, according to his father, Sechaba Mofokeng, who spoke to Soccer Laduma.
The deal was simple, and the stakes were high. If Pirates failed to win the league, the winger would hand Khoza R200,000. If they lifted the title, the chairman would buy him a house of his choice.
"So they made a bet, if they didn't win the league, he (Mofokeng) would give the chairman R200,000. He said, if I win the league, the chairman would buy him any house of his choice," Sechaba said.
The exchange reportedly left the young winger speechless. Pirates ended their 14-year wait and won the championship, with Mofokeng playing an instrumental role in the triumph. The 22-year-old spent four years with the club, winning seven trophies, including the league title.
Khoza kept his word. "The house is there, he delivered," Sechaba confirmed.
Sechaba also revealed how close his son is to the Pirates chairman, who he says shaped him off the pitch as well as on it.
"He did so much for me in my life and he taught me a lot about life. I think he deserved to get something back," he said.
Mofokeng left the Buccaneers in July for Belgium, having scored 29 goals in more than 120 matches. Four months in, he has already impressed at Union Saint-Gilloise.
He has a league title, seven trophies, a European move and a house he did not have to pay R200,000 for. Not a bad bet.

Red Arrows Coach Handed Air Force Car After Chiefs Confed Cup Upset
Red Arrows did not stop at knocking Kaizer Chiefs out of the Confederation Cup. They have now rewarded the man who masterminded it with a set of wheels.
Head coach Chisi Mbewe has been handed a Toyota Mark X after leading the Zambian side to the group stage of the competition for the first time in the club's history. Arrows eliminated Amakhosi on penalties after the tie finished 1-1 on aggregate.
According to an official club statement released on Monday, Lieutenant General Oscar Msitu Nyoni, head of the Zambia Air Force, honoured a promise to help Mbewe carry out his duties.
"The Commander of the Zambia Air Force (ZAF), Lt Gen Oscar Msitu Nyoni, has fulfilled his promise to assist Chisi Mudala Mbewe, head coach of Red Arrows Football Club, in carrying out his duties by handing over an official vehicle from the Zambia Air Force fleet," the statement read.
At the handover ceremony at the Air Force headquarters, Nyoni said the gesture is part of the force's tradition, under which the Red Arrows head coach is entitled to an official vehicle.
"The Commander noted that the team reached the continental tournament at the very time this promise materialised, making it an ideal opportunity to officially hand over the car to Warrant Officer Class Two Mbewe," the statement said.
The decision followed a request from the Red Arrows president for the coach to be given transport.
Mbewe is a serving member of the Zambia Air Force, holding the rank of Warrant Officer Class Two, which makes him a soldier as well as a giant-killer.
For Chiefs supporters, it is a bitter pill. While Arrows celebrate a historic milestone and prepare for their maiden group-stage campaign, Amakhosi are still trying to rebuild their confidence after the exit, with the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates looming.
Wounded Giants Chiefs And Sundowns Face Carling Cup Reckoning After CAF Humiliation
Two of South Africa's biggest clubs are bleeding, and Tuesday night is their chance to stop it.
Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns open their Carling Knockout Cup campaigns under heavy pressure after exits from continental competition left both sides scrambling for answers.
Fernando Da Cruz's Amakhosi host TS Galaxy at FNB Stadium, and the Rockets have been a nemesis in recent meetings.
Chiefs were dumped out of the Confederation Cup by Zambia's Red Arrows on penalties after winning the second leg 1-0, and the pain is still fresh.
Doubts around Da Cruz are growing, and a slip against Galaxy days before the Soweto Derby would only turn up the heat.
At Loftus Versfeld, Sundowns welcome Marumo Gallants. The defending champions were the shock of the CAF club competitions, failing to get past the preliminary round of the Champions League.
Angola's Wiliete SC eliminated them on away goals after a 1-1 draw in Pretoria on Friday, ending a long run of group-stage appearances.
Miguel Cardoso has called it "a dark night" and promised his team will rise from the ashes. Now he needs to show it.
Orlando Pirates are also in action on Tuesday, and their mood could hardly be more different.
The Buccaneers dismantled Namibia's African Stars 5-0 on aggregate to reach the Champions League group stage, and they will be hoping that momentum carries into the cup.
The gap between the three Soweto and Pretoria giants has rarely looked this stark. For Chiefs and Sundowns, one wounded week has to end somewhere, and the Carling Cup is the quickest place to start a recovery.

Young Africans Sack Manqoba Mngqithi After Just Three Months
Tanzanian football giants Young Africans SC have parted ways with South African head coach Manqoba Mngqithi with immediate effect, bringing his three-month tenure at the club to an abrupt end.
The club announced the decision on Saturday, 24 October 2026, following a goalless draw against TRA United in the Tanzanian Premier League.
The result left the defending champions second in the standings, five points behind rivals Simba SC, coached by fellow South African Steve Barker.
Young Africans also confirmed the departure of fitness coach Chyna Mokaila. In a statement, the club thanked both coaches for their contributions and announced that the search for a new head coach was underway.
Mngqithi, 55, joined Young Africans in July 2026 on a two-year contract after leaving Golden Arrows, whom he had guided to a top-eight finish in the South African Premiership.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach enjoyed a promising start in Tanzania, guiding Young Africans to victory over Simba in the Community Shield and securing qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage.
However, pressure mounted following a 2-1 defeat to Simba in the Kariakoo Derby, with the subsequent draw against TRA United appearing to seal his fate.
Despite his dismissal, Mngqithi leaves with an impressive record of approximately 10 wins, two draws and one defeat in 13 matches across competitions.
His sudden departure has sparked debate among football supporters, with some questioning the decision to dismiss him so early in the season.
The experienced coach has already been linked with a possible return to South African football, although speculation surrounding a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs remains unconfirmed.
Young Africans will now turn their attention to appointing a replacement as they look to defend their domestic title and compete in the CAF Champions League.
